I have been freeing myself form all the plastic, non stick coatings, etc that I can.. I used stainless steel water bottles to avoid the palstic chemicals, but found I was allergic to a form of nickel (and stainless is in part made from nickel).. Afterward I do believe the water tastes better..
CONS:
It is heavier than all other options, but not a hell of a lot.. To put things in perspective, a gallon of water weighs quite a bit more then the empty bottle.. However, the little loop that serves as a handle will only accept one finger.. I would imagine if you have arthritis this would be a bad choice. Also the opening is rather small. I only use it for water, so cleaning sould not be an issue for me..
CLEANING:
I would imagine a special brush and cleaning procedure would be required.. When I got it, there was no off smell at all (I would have noticed).. I put tap water in the bottle overnight, then emptied it and filled it up with my filtered water, and let it sit another day (I felt that any contaminants that the water would absorb would get most of it)..
One of the reasons I believe the water tastes better is because after a while plastic probably grows those cultures of bacteria that like plastic.. And I certainly do not want to use bleach, because it would probably leach out chemicals from the plastic.. Been using the glass bottle long enough for the taste to go off from suspected bacteria growth, but not a hint of it so far (but I can hit the glass with a little bleach if it ever does)..
After the stainless steel, I went back to the old BPA releasing plastic for a few months, then bought a BPA FREE plastic jug.. After switching to this glass jug, I realized the water tastes better than either (but to be fair I am picky about my water; so others may not notice)..
Some 90 percent of the chemicals that make up non stick coatings, and plastic bottles, etc have """NOT""" been evaluated for human safety.. SO the all the hoopla over BPA (and the fact that it is now illegal in some other countries) comes from only testing 10 percent of these chemicals.. I am freeing myself from all the plastic I can to be safe from the other 90 percent..
The lid is plastic, but very nice.. And only a thin ring touches the glass to seal it (ot enough plastic for me to taste, and likely not enough to have any negative health effects)..
Waiting for the angry conservative who believes the coprporate line (all our chemicals are safe) like a religion to post some deragotary remark..
