guaifenesin is main ingredient in nearly if not all expectorants - for a non-technical term, it loosens the phlegm/ mucus - for me that nearly always means whatever I have doesn't pass my bronchial area and become deep-seated infection. The difference between guaifenesin and guaifenesin "D" or "DM" is as follows: D contains Pseudoephedrine HCl (hydrochloride) - 120mg which some of us call an allergy pill (check labels) - and works to drain the nasal passages - DM contains Dextromethorphan or dextromethorphan HBr 60mg - and works to reduce coughing. I keep basic guaifenesin, pill and liquid in my medicine cabinet and my travel kit and take the instant I feel something "heading toward my chest". I keep DM at home for the rare times that I have severe coughing; I was told once that,if you are taking the basic expectorant be it guaifenesin or whatever, a little coughing isn't bad as it clears passages.I am told that the most economical way to buy any OTC med is by the ingredient, not compounded; ask your pharmacist for the brand of the OTC guaifenesin, the OTC pseudoephedrine and he'll probably tell you efficacious dosage levels. Finally, daily consumption of guaifenesin is 2400 mg MAXIMUM. Your choice of extended release (ER) or not is purely your own discipline; most people doctors tell me, if the sick people aren't fibbing, miss the midday dose frequently. This means that 400mg may be cheaper but not if you miss.
One can choose 600mg 4X a day but really that means a mid - night dose for many which is difficult. Thus I think the perfect choice is either 600 twice a day or a 1200ER. I don't recall ever having to take more than that daily but that may be wrong or wrong advice. A pharmacist, again, will usually tell you. If you are not good at math, again ask pharmacist or someone who is. The cost of this product in various forms varies enormously.
