Customer Reviews of 4 Way Nasal Decongestant Nasal Spray, Fast Acting, 1-Ounce (29.6 ml) (Pack of 3)Customer Review: Allergy Relief Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using 4-Way for many years. I live in Southern California and have an allergy. I take a 12-hour allergy prescription but there are times when I need extra help especially during pollen season or when the Santa Ana winds blow. I use 4-Way once in the morning and it lasts all day. It's fast and over the years, I find it works better for me than Afrin. It's not the easiest product to find in stores so getting the multi-pack on Amazon works out great because you can't beat the price. I just make sure I have other small items to make the free shipping threshold.
Customer Review: Good and Fast Summary: 5 Stars
This product is fantastic for opening clogged passages. Give a spray a couple times a day and you'll be amazed. It even works for plugged Eustachian tubes deep in your sinuses (my particular condition). Don't overuse it because your body responds to its effects and compensates, creating a negative overall impact when you discontinue use. 4 or 5 days should do the trick. Beyond that, it's not a good thing.
Customer Review: Be Careful of Over Use Summary: 4 Stars
Even if the "addiction" concerns apply here, I don't believe there's any problem with the "regular" 4-Way mist. The regular doesn't contain the phenylephrine hydrochloride, and in addition, the regular specifically states "Non-Habit Forming" (this one does not).
I'm not sure how addiction is defined in the other review, but I do know that decongestants like Neo-Synephrine (phenylephrine) do have a "rebound" effect. That is, if you continue to use them, nasal stuffiness will begin to INCREASE, at which point you need to back off. A simple saline spray (just water and salt) is very effective and very safe, and there are many brands on the market. If that doesn't work for you, then try a Nasaline Nasal Irrigator, a truly marvelous invention.
Otherwise, you'll just have to be patient, get plenty of rest, and wait for your cold to go away. And, of course, there's chicken soup :)
Customer Review: caution !!! Summary: 2 Stars
4 Way nasal spray really does do the trick of relieving nasal congestion. If you're having difficulty clearing your nose because of allergies, hay fever or a bad cold, this product will clear your nose in no time.
4 Way is best used as a spray. Spray twice in each nostril for the maximum effect. It does not make you drowsy.
However, there is a plethora of precautions about this drug. As Amazon notes, "Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease; high blood pressure; thyroid disease; diabetes; trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland. When using this product do not use more than directed; do not use more than 3 days; use only as directed."
If that wasn't enough to make you think twice about this product, then maybe my personal story will make you think. There's a very dirty little secret about 4 Way--it can easily become an addictive substance--just like Afrin, only not so easily. If you use this too frequently, your nasal passages gradually become more and more clogged simply because they haven't received enough 4 Way to keep them clear. Obviously, you can--and I did--wind up in a nasty habit of buying this product both in name brand form and in generic form at large retail pharmacy chain stores. I have heard stories from doctors stating that they have been approached by patients claiming to have been addicted to nasal sprays and nose drops for up to ten years at a time. You may then need another prescription nasal spray to get your nose functioning properly again.
Naturally, with the precautions 4 Way tells everyone about--and the horror stories that they don't openly address--I cannot give this product a positive review. I vividly remember seeing doctors cringe noticeably when I told them about my former addiction.
2 stars for this product--but only if you use 4 Way for three days at the most.
I would strongly encourage you to seek another nasal spray.
Customer Review: Worst ever Summary: 1 Stars
I used this product because it was all I had in my apartment and it works pretty well - if you only want to breathe better for about 2 hours and then be more congested than when you started. And since it can only be used every 4 hours, you're out of luck when your congestion returns. I was having so much trouble breathing last night (only 3 hours after using it) I used it again. Now not only am I more stuffy than I have EVER felt in my life, I'm also jittery and sweaty. It seems its very easy to overdo it with this medication. My advice, save your money or spend it on something that actually works like Afrin 12 hour or even a saline nasal rinse. Anything would b better than this. 4-way Fast acting nasal spray is probably THE WORST decongestant product on the market.
