It was when I was in the Himalayan mountains that I encountered a small town that I camped in due to the frigid winds and a pervading fear of the "Yeti". At a local inn composed of 13 old sandfloor mats, I found an opium addict who advised me to "wash my nose", at first I thought it was a peculiar insult but later I found out that it was a friendly gesture reaped upon smelly strangers from the West.
I learnt about the Neti Pot slowly, first in an old Chinese ad stuck to the bathroom of the inn, later from a 1978 Sears Robuck catalog at the local post office, then from a man who wanted to share his nose with me. Most local folks in the Himalayan mountains use a Neti Pot regularly to wash out stuck boogers, rice flakes, dead mice, demons or dust particles which have lodged in their nose arteries. They think it's bad luck to stick a finger inside the nostrils but have no problem giving you the finger. I spoke to a Buddhist monk about this, unfortunately he was on a silent meditation sabbatical and said relatively nothing.
Most everyone uses salt water but for the more adventrous exploratory people, some swear by Wasabi, hot mustard, Yellowtail, mackerel, conch, green onion, chili sauce, horseradish, chile powder, Srircha Hot Chili Sauce, or fresh chili peppers, white vinegar, and salt.
I wouldn't dare do use those injurious ingredients since just eating those hot spices cause convulsions in my sinus track. I only use warm water with a touch of lemon. If you don't know how to use a Neti Pot, be sure to read up on it. I almost drowned when I first attempted it.
You have to find your own comfort point. I follow up with some warm tea drinking then chanting to the old Himalayan mountain gods and then a partly naked bath in rose water to ward off evil spirits and tax collectors.
