I've found over time the rolling balls get sticky and stop rolling smoothly because the lotion eventually cakes on and dries out, even if you use the cover.
So what I did was buy a second one of this item (from a brick & mortar store). That way, when one is getting a bit gunky and needs a good soaking to clean, you can fill up the 2nd one and use it while soaking the first one.
The rolling balls pop out from the back. Makes them easy to clean, you can soak them in a small dish or tub. The first time this happened, I was trying to clean the unit and I didn't realize the balls came out and ooops, one went right down the garbage disposal... so use a sink stopper or strainer, as I had to get out the needle-nose to retrieve the missing ball from the garbage disposal.
Thinner lotions work better and after a while of use, as I mentioned, take it apart and soak it clean, you can pop the rolling balls out and soak them clean as well.
That's why I have two, so that while one is being soaked clean as new, I can use the other one.
