Take any positive reviews of this product with a huge grain of salt!It's amazing that people are suckered into buying this product. The active ingredients listed on the package are "Anas Barbariae Hepatis Et Cordis Extractum 200 CK HPUS" For most folks unfamiliar with Latin, that sounds like it's gotta be some miracle drug, right? Here's the true story.
Since 1925, Oscillococcinum has been prepared as follows. Into a one litre bottle, a mixture of pancreatic juice and glucose is poured. Next a Barbary duck (that's the "Anas Barbariae") is decapitated and 35 grams of its liver and 15 grams of its heart are put into the bottle (that's the "Hepatis Et Cordis"). After 40 days in the sterile bottle, liver and heart disintegrate into a kind of goo, which is then diluted with water into the entire world production of Oscillococcinum for the year.
There's no logical reason to believe that anything in duck liver or heart will be an effective flu remedy. But even if there were some magic substance, the manufacturing process guarantees that it will not be in the finished product. The laws of chemistry indicate that after the 12th dilution, it is unlikely that a single molecule from the original organs will remain. Moreover, at the dilutions that Boiron indicates on their packaging (that's the "200 CK HPUS" part) the concentration of the original substance would be 1 part in 100^200, which is a 1 followed by 400 zeroes. A 1 followed by 100 zeroes is called a googol. The estimated number of particles in the universe that we can see is a googol, give or take a few zeroes. So in order for one of the original duck molecules to be present in a container of Oscillococcinum, the mass of that container would have to be about a googol googol googol times our world, which would be incomprehensibly larger than the visible universe.
A little research is all it takes to discover that there isn't a SINGLE reputable scientific study demonstrating the efficacy of this product. And even assuming that the "active ingredients" (duck heart and liver) have any effect on the flu, remember that by spending your $16 on a container of goose liver pate and crackers, you'll be a dose of duck organs that's billions of times stronger than what goes into this so-called "drug". All things considered, your money is better invested in a flu shot BEFORE flu season starts.

I was skeptical to take this remedy but upon recommendation from my father I decided to give it a try. I tell you, it was truly amazing. My husband and my son both received flu shots this year, I did not. My husband was lucky and did not get the flu. However, both my son and I got the flu (shows you how effective the flu shot is!). Within 1 day of taking this remedy I felt significantly better. After the 2nd day, I felt like I had nothing more than a cold. Granted, I did not take this remedy alone - I took it with plenty of fluids & bed rest. In short, it worked like a charm. I will always turn to this medication at the onset of the flu.On a side note, many of my friends from India have been using this remedy for decades - without reservation - and it works for them too.

I started using homeopathics after a series of events : my oldest son was diagnosed with asthma after having a horrible reaction to his MMRs and I developed allergies to several foods after having my second child and became bed-ridden for 3 weeks after taking flu shots.
I was a teacher for many years, so my immune system was compromised even before I had children. I was introduced to homeopathics by our family doctor here in NYC, who has been consistently voted by his peers as one of the best in NYC (he has appeared 3 years in a rown on the NY Mag survey of best health care providers).
Let me just say I cannot tell you how much our lives have changed since undergoing homeopathic treatment for our chronic illnesses and using products like Oscillo. Not one of us has had the flu in over 4 years thanks to this product.
As opposed to respondent #2, there have been many clinic trials and studies of homeopathics. Actually, homeopathy is based on "proving", the collecting of data --anecdotal & clinical-- over a period of time. Some homeopathics like calendula and arnica have been used, even in "conventional" OTCs for over 100 years.
HOMEPATHY is the scientific journal in which a lot of the clinical data is collected. You can find an abstract on a double blind using oscillo here :

There a lot of naysayers who like to spread fear about homeopathy.
I actually took some oscillo the past two days after I started showing symptoms of the flu : tiredness, achiness, scratchy throat. Today is day 2 and feel much better.
If you are not familiar with homeopathy, best thing is to pick up a book about the subject AND talk to a professional.
You'll never regard allopathic medicine in the same way ever again.

I'm not a doctor, but I've used over the counter "western medicines" and homeopathic medicines. We still have a chest full of western medicines, but we've also come to trust the homeopathic medicines from Boiron (including Oscillococcinum). (B&T Natural and Wellness brands are other brands we've tried and found true to their claims.) I firmly believe the claim on the Oscillococcinum box that taking the medicine as recommended at the first sign of the flu decreases the effect of the flu. We have now been using (and reusing) this product for over 3 years and we're sold on it's effectiveness though it's hard to explain.
The negative reviews I have read on Amazon are not by people who have apparently used the product, but rather by people who are attacking homeopathic medicines in general. In researching Oscillococcinum online, I found a few very critical attacks on the homeopathic medicine manufacturing process and claims that they couldn't work. The critics claim that the product is a placebo because it's so diluted that the final product does not contain traceable amounts of the active ingredients. That seems like a reasonable claim, but homeopathic medicines are more effective when the doses of the active ingredients are smaller, which seems counter intuitive based on our experiences with western medicines.
If it is true that Oscillo is just a placebo, then a double blind study of Oscillo when compared to a placebo should generate similar results. I have found interesting results from double blind studies done on Oscillococcinum that seem to tell the another side of the story on the product.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study of 100 patients showed that, when given at the onset of influenza-like symptoms, Oscillococcinum worked better than the placebo in reducing the symptoms of chills (85.7% vs. 57.1%), stiffness (72.5% vs. 41.9%) and fever (79.1% vs. 40%). Also 80% of patients given Oscillococcinum' reported the treatment to be a success vs. 38% in the placebo group.'
In a double-blind, clinical trial of 300 patients with influenza-like symptoms, 55% of the patients taking Oscillococcinum' reported no chills after four days, compared with 27% of the placebo- controlled group. More patients in the Oscillo' group also reported no aches after four days-70% were ache-free compared with 48% in the placebo group. Fever in the Oscillococcinum' group was significantly lower starting on the I second day of the treatment, compared to the placebo group.'
In a double-blind, clinical trial of 478 patients published in The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 1989, researchers studied Oscillococcinum's effect on nine influenza-like symptoms-fever, headaches, stiffness, lumbar and particular pain, shivers, cough, coryza and fatigue - versus a placebo. The proportion of patients who recovered within 48 hours of treatment was significantly superior among the Oscillo group than the placebo group.
A recent double-blind, clinical trial of 372 patients performed by f researchers at a German University and published in April 1998 yielded results similar to those published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (above). The complete disappearance of symptoms after 48 hours was significantly superior among the Oscillo group than among the placebo group. This clinical trial also showed that treatment of influenza-like symptoms with Oscillococcinum' has positive effect on the decline of symptoms and on the duration of the disease.

I tend to believe these double blind study sources, especially since I've tried the product and know what it's done for me and my family. We're sold on Oscillo.

This "medicine" contains nothing but sugar. It is so called placebo or blank tablet containing no medicine of any kind. No wonder they are asking you to take this stuff at the very first symptoms of flu. It is a 50% shot for Boiron. 50% of people will mistake symptoms for flu or just naturally overcome their symptoms, but taking this useless pill in a process will convince them that Oscillo worked...The rest of people who will get flu anyway might think they did not take enough or took it too late or simply never buy Oscillo again. So what? 50% of people got tricked=money in Borion's pockets. This scam is ridiculous and FDA or Justice Department do nothing to stop these charlatans from selling this junk in US.
Please note that Oscilo has nothing to do with herbal remedies or real Homeopathic medicine. Homeo-similar, pathic-pathology= treating symptoms of disease with symptom inducing agents. Homeopathy actually works in most cases. But Oscillo is just shameless scam and has nothing to do with Homeopathy.
