I got this thing in the mail yesterday, and I'm delighted! It works WONDERFULLY. It does take a few passes to really clear an area.. but given some patience it's magic. The pain is the biggest concern of a lot of folks with these things. As I and some friends discovered, this is one of Life's Unfair Moments -- the worse you feel you need an epilator, the harder it will be to use.
Deep heavy hair hurts like heck coming out.. soft peach fuzz you can hardly feel leaving -- it's just a little prickly sensation. I'd suggest testing the area you want to clear with some tweezers first. If you can clear say a square inch of it without hurting too bad, the epilator should work just fine for you.
If the tweezers hurt too much, I'd suggest passing up epilators. However, if you're desperate there are some topical anesthetics on the market you might consider. The prescription brand is EMLA.. there's also an OTC version, "elemax" I think. I've never had occasion to try either with an epilator, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I was reluctant to purchase this product after the disaster I had with the first Epi-Lady that came out. Talk about painful. Being a brunette, the hair on my face, arms and legs are not light. I tried it on my arm first and the hair came right off. The first use was not really painful but it had a warm tingling sensation - kind of like getting a tattoo. I then used it on my face where I am plagued with chin whiskers. I took them right out and I didn't feel a thing. It was wonderful. What took me an hour to pluck before was done in less than 3 minutes. It didn't get every hair but I'd say it got 90% of them and I just waited another day, went over the area again and got the rest. I did try it on my underarm and again, it worked like a charm. I'm not interested in using in on my legs as it's just easier to shave them but for those of you who have the chin/mustache hair that won't go away, GET THIS PRODUCT. It works better than tweezing, waxing, Nair etc. I've already recomended it to many of my friends and they are anxious to get theres.Customer Review: I Couldn't Believe the Results!

Tips: If you have ingrown hairs before you use this, exfoliate first. If not, exfoliate after to prevent ingrown hairs.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
You are pulling your hair out by the root! It is going to hurt unless you are use to the feeling from previous epilating or waxing.
Your hair grows in cycles, so you may (like me) have to use it for a week to get all the new-grown hair before you see longer lasting results.
Use a towel under as there is no way for the device to catch/store the hair.

After reading reviews here and elsewhere, I was somewhat afraid when my Braun 3170 arrived. The little rows of whirring tweezers reminded me of some sort of torture device and I was afraid of flaying my skin off. However, in just a couple minutes, I was soon zipping off my leg hair on the higher of the 2 speeds like a pro. It didn't hurt very much, not even along my inner thighs. It felt like the slightest stinging sensation there, and I barely felt any pain along less sensitive areas such as my calves. It took quite some time (about an hour and a half) to remove my leg hair as I had to go over the same area several times due to varying direction of hair growth. Therefore I didn't get a chance to try it out on my underarms/bikini areas yet.
I'm sure that these areas will hurt more, but after years of shaving, Nair, and waxing, this is definitely the easiest, least messy method of hair removal I've tried. I wish I had one of these nifty gadgets 10 years ago. Well worth it.

This epilator is amazing. It hurts far less than waxing if you do it gently for the first time. Then for a second round to clean perfectly, you can speed up and be harsh on yourself. It doesn't hurt even one tenth of what it hurts if you wax. And it cleans as well as waxing. I would say it even takes much lesser time than waxing unless you are too skilled at waxing. I say this because before buying it, I was scared it will hurt a lot and bought it only for rare use, but now I think I will never use wax again.
Ya, hold the skin taut while using it, and I did use it everywhere, it doesn't hurt as much. You can also use it on the back side of the body where you can't look and can't wax.
And all this comes with no messiness and no fear of burns. I certainly couldn't have asked for more.
