Customer Review: Counting the merits-stroke by stroke-for each shaving zone+the unwelcome cartridge cost!

Before I start off, it might be useful to understand the difference between electric shaving and shaving using the conventional razor for those who have not experienced the both.
Using the razor, we usually apply some kind of a lubricant like gel or foam. Using the electric razor, I have found the lubricant to be optional. Using the razor we essentially wipe the blade over the shaving area, while using the electric razor I feel, it is more like a scrub. The scrubbing does not necessarily mean that the skin would get irritated more but for some people and brands of electric shavers, it does. If there is any skin irritation/burn 1% Hydrocortisone ointment provides relief in a matter of minutes.
Applying lubricant may also not always get you better results in all shaving zones when using an electric shaver. However, sometimes it does. If you apply a lubricant and shave with an electric shaver, the cleaning process may take you a little extra bit of effort.
A quick note on the shaving foam vs. the Gels - For me the conventional foam yields better results than the newer gels. The cheapest Gillette shaving lather yielded better results than the much more expensive Neutrogena gels. Therefore, you may want to experiment especially before you settle for an expensive product.
At this point, it might be useful to mention that I switched to the 790cc shaving system after having used Philips/Norelco-Razor for 18 long years. My facial hair is not one of the toughest but is oriented randomly enough to make my shave hard to do a perfect job especially using an electric shaver.
I classify my shave into four zones based on the hair types/difficulties I encounter:
Zone 1 - on the cheeks: Shaving is easy in this zone and I have been able to get close shaves by several means wet and dry/electric and razor shavers.
However, Norelco were nasty on this seemingly straightforward job. The shaves were usually not perfect and if I tried to shave multiple times, the razor burn would be nasty. The discomfort went to the extent that I had to actively research and discovered the Hydrocortisone and it became a norm.
With Braun, this area is a piece of cake as it should be and there is no need to apply steroids any more. Also notable is the fact that the number of scrubs it takes is considerably less than a Norelco - almost the same number of strokes is required as the conventional razor. Using a shaving foam/gel further reduces the number of strokes and the subsequent skin irritation.
Zone 2 - the chin & below the cheeks: Hairs in this zone seem tougher but the reality is that the hairs grow closer to the skin to be harder to pick. For me the random orientation begins here. Here Braun is clearly superior to a Norelco and comes very close to the conventional razor in terms of the number of strokes and related skin irritation.
The pressure of application of an electric razor in this zone is considerably higher. However, with 790cc the increased pressure would not result in a razor burn. Any attempt to mimic the results of 790cc with a Norelco may result in severe skin burn and irritation. I would therefore switch to a razor with Norelco in this zone.
Zone 3 - the moustache: My moustache is is sensitive and the lining with the upper lip if irritated would take considerable time to calm down. There also seem to be some random oriented hairs and then of course are the ones that are otherwise perfectly visible but hide along the nose when it comes to shaving! Along the nose, Norelco shaves the best as its circular cutters can find hairs better. However, 790cc did not lag too far behind if I allowed a few extra strokes, which is easy to do, as the burn factor is absent.
790cc is also benign on my upper lip lining, Norelco and conventional razors were outright nasty! On the flat areas my experiences were a mixture of Zone 1 and 2 with 790cc faring the best.
Zone 4 - the neck: Even though 790cc does a much better job than the Norelco, I feel that the conventional razor is the champion of the shave on the neck. 790cc however does produce acceptable results with some foam applied. If you have to the time to shave pinched skin, you will get the same results as the razor. You may not want to try Norelco in this area since the resultant burn may last for days and the shaving might need a razor to complete.
Now a word on the cleaning system. If you want the liquid inside it to last, always rinse the 790cc under hot water and shake it to remove water before you put the 790cc in the cleaner. I did find traces of shaved hair under the foil after a full clean cycle. I do clean the foil with a brush and detergent once every 2 weeks. If you tried to clean the cavity in the cleaning system every other week, you would find good amount of smudge there as well. I consider this normal. However, what I do not like about this system is paying for the cleaning cartridge every month. I therefore perfected an 85% rubbing alcohol, 10% glycerin and 5% lemon oil (all purchased from a drug store) concoction for my cartridge that seems to work well and save me the monthly charge. Do not use other forms of denatured alcohol as some of the preparations may contain potentially dangerous additives. Some people have reported that mouthwash also works well but I doubt that since the mouthwash are water based.

How often do I need to exchange the Clean & Renew? Refill Cartridge?
It is recommended that you change your Clean & Renew refill cartridge at least once every two months or when the Clean & Renew system notifies you that the cleaning solution is ready to be changed. This will vary depending on how often the system is in use.
Do you have any recommendations for how to shave with an electric foil shaver?
We recommend that you shave before taking a shower. After a few days without shaving (for example, the first shave after the weekend), you should trim your stubble before you shave. Stretch the skin and shave against the direction of beard growth. Hold the shaver at a right angle (90°) to your skin. Maintain even pressure to achieve the most thorough and comfortable shave from Braun.
How often do I need to change the shaver head?
We recommend replacing all cutter parts every 18 months. In order maintain optimal performance, we included a replacement part indicator in the display to ensure that you?ll know when to exchange the cutter parts.
Does the battery have a memory effect, as can occur with cell phones or laptops?
No, the Braun Series 7 electric shavers for men use a Li-Ion battery that has no memory effect. You can recharge it whenever you want, and it has a low self-discharge rate (vs. NiMh batteries).
