Hooray, looks like somebody in Syracuse, NY bought the Brioschi brand when the former makers announced they were retiring the product after 130 yrs. This simple antacid is the best way IMHO to treat reflux burn at the top of your throat (laryngeal reflux or something like that??). Fun to drink, too.
I'm NOT a Doc (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once). Anyway, I'm convinced that Brioschi's simple sodium bicarb (no aspirin to mess it up) goes right after the acid in your throat. Your throat acid apparently activates the nasty Pepsin that can sneak up there from your stomach if you have a reflux leak. Pepsin loves to digest protein. That's fine when your Pepsin and your steak dinner are both in your stomach, but up at the top of your throat, guess what the Pepsin attacks? Well there's no food protein, but, aha, those jailbreak Pepsin molecules can start eating that nice protein making up the walls of your throat! Yes it eats YOU! Most antacids or proton pump inhibitors start to work way down in the stomach. Fine for most situations, but Brioschi fizzes right onto the spot where you need it. The rest goes down to treat your stomach.
Grandma had the intuition, but the Doc who is President of the medical society that studies this upper reflux stuff (Dr. Koffman?) wrote a good explanation of that AWOL Pepcin in her book, "Dropping Acid." (Gotta love the title.) She doesn't even mention Brioschi, but I'm extending her logic; good enough for this layman. She might flame my review if she ever sees it, but I'll go with Grandma and my, um, "extension" of the good Dr's logic. Oh, watch out for all the sodium part of the sodium bicarbonate if you have high blood pressure, but otherwise just drink, feel the fizz, and feel better. Fast.Brioschi Antacid 8.5 oz (240 g)
