What a mundane item to try to review! Let's talk about price first.
I usually buy Target Premium Double Rolls - decent quality at a decent price. When I checked prices at the Target, the only size package where they had the same for both Charmin and Target was the 18 double roll pack, so my comparison is based on that. I think the most sensible way to compare is based on square feet of paper because, regardless of 1-ply or 2-ply, you're always going to "pull" about the same distance of paper from the roll. A double roll of Target is 31.8 square feet while a double roll of Charmin is 36.5 square feet. Multiplying that by 18 rolls and then dividing into total price ($8.99 for Charmin and $9.99 for Target) gives Charmin: $.0137/sqft and Target: $.0175/sqft. That's actually a substantial difference - the Target costs over 25% more!
But what about quality? If the Target is higher quality, the price differential would be justified. Despite the difference in ply (Target 2-ply, Charmin 1-ply), I find the Charmin to actually be superior in terms of strength and equivalent in terms of comfort. So Charmin wins on both counts, making it the value champ.
Perhaps a plumbing difference? I had tried Charmin's super-strong variant a year or so ago and almost had it plug up my pipes! I never bought it again and was left with a very negative impression of the entire product line. There is no such issue with the "Basic" line. No clogging and no scary, "OMG it's not going down and the water is gonna overflow!" moments.
The last potential issue is getting a box of 40 rolls left on your door step. When I ordered these, I had visions of the UPS guy lugging a *giant* box to my front door with "TOILET PAPER" emblazoned on its side like a neon sign for all my neighbors to see. "Got big plans, eh Philo?" But the box is remarkably small - 21.5in x 17.5in x 8.5in. Until you unpack it, you won't believe it contains 40 double rolls. Consequently, storage is not as big an issue as I thought it would be. 9 plastic-wrapped 4-roll packages sit unobtrusively on the floor of a linen closet. The 10th (now minus 2 rolls) is under the sink in the bathroom vanity.
I'm a single person, so I think my new TP cache will last me the better part of a year. I'm sufficiently pleased that I'll reorder the Charmin Basic from Amazon at that time.
