Customer Reviews of Cleanwell Natural Hand Sanitzer, 6-Ounce Spray Bottles (Pack of 3)Customer Review: Good product Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good hand sanitizer....has an interesting smell, but can't say it is worse than the alcohol - based hand sanitizers.
Customer Review: a bulk pack of "meh". Summary: 3 Stars
USE
"1350+ sprays" is a bit misleading when each is so small that you easily need four spritzes in a single use. Other than that, it evaporates fairly quickly (perhaps even faster than its alcohol counterpart), which at least makes it easy to use and go about your work.
SMELL
The liquid has a strong citronella-like scent. Wondering what that citrus smell that everyone mentions really smells like? It smells like citronella. You know, the natural bug repellant. Like other reviewers, sure, i can get used to this scent -- however, i meet new people (through both work and play) on a regular basis, and i don't want my first impression to be the strange smell on my hands. Thus, i cannot use it before leaving my apartment, much less on the road.
Given the lovely scent of their Orange Vanilla hand soap, i'm rather disappointed about this.
EFFECTIVENESS
This stuff has a surprisingly small amount of thymol (the active ingredient), and data are scarce on the hand sanitizer's actual effectiveness. Much of the wording is carefully selected to say that "Ingenium [is]... proven to kill 99.99% of germs", without going into the ratio of Ingenium mixture to other ingredients. They seem to have recently added a data sheet to their website that discusses the hand sanitizer, but it's still relatively vague, doesn't offer details on a precise product that was tested, and doesn't offer details on the study performed or how it was performed.
For sake of comparison:
- CleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer: 0.05% thymol
- CleanWell Hand Soap: 0.04% thymol
- Listerine: 0.064% thymol (plus many other active ingredients AND alcohol)
- Benefect Botanical Disinfectant: 0.23% thymol
Don't get me wrong -- thymol has certainly been proven to kill germs, but i'm not aware of any study that has been done on such small concentrations. It isn't my desire to doubt this company (on the contrary!), but if what they _suggest_ is true, then why jump through linguistic hoops to avoid saying it outright? Why not shout it from rooftops and offer test details freely, so as not to leave anyone guessing?
To this end, i've sent a request for more detailed information on the studies, and i'll add an update or comment to this review if/when i receive a response.
CONCLUSION
Being optimistic, i'll operate under the assumption that this hand sanitizer does, in fact, kill 99.99% of germs. Since i can't use it in public (see: SMELL), i've had to figure out other uses. Currently, i use it in the kitchen, after handling meat and fish products; it's natural, and the ingredients should be edible, so this seems to be a good option.
However, i likely won't buy this particular item again.
