Currently, we have an old standard clipper/trimmer from Wahl and a Remington cordless clipper/trimmer. These are what I will be comparing the iStubble against for this review. I've had this for approximately one month, and now that my hair has had a chance to grow back and get cut again a few times, I'm ready to do my review.
The claim to fame for the iStubble is the lack of multiple attachments for trimming hair to different lengths, thanks to its motorized head which adjusts to the length you want at the touch of a button. The head also pivots, allowing it to be used on curved surfaces without loss of precision in cutting length. Sure, it's cordless too, but that isn't anything new.
The iStubble comes well packaged, with multiple accessories for keeping it maintained and directions for its use. Not a whole lot of difference between what it needs and the Wahl, just a brush and some lubricating oil. Directions on usage, cleaning, and maintenance are clear and explained well. While giving it its first 16hr charge, I read over the instructions to familiarize myself with it.
The biggest trick to using the iStubble was knowing what length I wanted and where. Typically, I know which number attachment to use for the Wahl. As far as I know, these aren't lengths, just a number. For the iStubble, I had to do a bit of conversion and thinking. I mean, just how long is .4mm anyhow? (Pretty damn short!) A bit of trial an error followed on some body areas not typically visible to others, and I had it worked out. I would not suggest you immediately start trimming your eyebrows, unless you know just how you long you want them, in metric measurement.
True to its marketing, the iStubble worked very well when used as intended. The head did need a little bit more pressure than I expected to get it to pivot around curves, but not a bald patch or uneven length was to be had. "Sensitive areas" were well cut and no rash or bumps were left behind, even then the guide was removed and the head contacted skin directly. With the guide on, no skin was pinched or accidentally cut. The shortest length of cut (.4mm) left a near smooth surface in its wake. Using the iStubble one handed was easy and fairly natural, the weight and balance just right. The lack of a cord was a boon as well, as it didn't drag all over the place while the iStubble was being used.
I came to like the iStubble pretty quickly. While the cut it makes is narrower than the Wahl or Remington, that's a plus in several body areas. The lack of guide attachments was rather helpful, as I didn't have to go digging around in my bathroom drawer for them like I usually do with both the Wahl and Remington. Less clutter! Woohoo! While it's not as versatile as the Wahl or Remington, both of which can be used for hairstyling/haircuts, that's quite ok with me. Sure, there is also a substantial price difference as well, about double, but I feel it's worth it in the end given the ease of use and precision.
