I compared this product ("Conair NM10 Heated Shiatsu Neck Massager.") with a similar product "Homedics NMS-350A Shiatsu Neck Massager." Both cost around $30 on Amazon at the time I am writing this.
The general shape and functions on the two products are pretty much the same except the Conair has two speeds and and no vibration mode and the Homedics has one speed and a vibration mode. They both have a heat option. When the Homedics is in vibration mode the Shiatsu swivels stop.
I got the Conair in never-used condition for $10 at a church rummage sale, and after several uses the motor stopped working so I ordered the Homedics. But later I tried the Conair and it worked. It turns out that both products turn off automatically as a safety measure. I didn't have the documentation for why the Conair turns off (time limit or motor overheating) but the Homedics turns off after 20 minutes.
For me the Conair was way better. The Homedics had an intermittent whiny grating noise which seemed related to the position or pressure. Sometimes it did not occur but I did not want to figure out the problem and have to work around that irritating noise.
More importantly, the Homedics did not fit my neck well so I could not get the pressure I wanted. I tried various positions, including bed, hard floor, and turning it upside down. My neck is thin, so it may work better for people who have thicker necks or who want only light pressure from the Shiatsu swivels.
There is a semicircular pad that extends below the Shiatsu swivels on both models, which seems to be designed to support the neck or upper back so the swivels don't just poke out of nowhere. This support pad was hard and uncomfortable on the Homedics model, particularly when I pulled on the wings to get more pressure (the documentation states that the handles in the wings are designed for pulling to apply more pressure). This same upper back / neck pad was soft and comfortable on the Conair. I rarely return items but I returned the Homedics to Amazon because it was so much less effective and less comfortable than the Conair.
Not long after getting the Conair I started using it for my whole back which may have been the cause of the automatic shut-off (too much time or overheating). But the shut-off is not a problem because I usually finish before it happens.
When doing the back I spread the side wings (which were designed to hang down from both sides of the neck). This doesn't seem to damage them so far as they are filled with resilient foam. Laying on a carpeted floor, starting in the lumbar region I prop my upper body up with a large bed rest pillow or several pillows and also pillows under my fanny so that I am not laying directly on the unit but just the right height above it so there is just the right amount of pressure (also the back does not have to arch so much). I wait about 50 cycles at each spot then move it a couple inches up the spine. I gradually reduce the pillow support to nothing I shift it to upper back and neck. As soon as it is above the lumbar region I put a Homedics Shiatsu lumbar massager there and have both going at once. Using the Conair this has been fantastic for loosening up a spasmed lower back that I have got from time to time in life from sitting at a computer for too long. I'd say I cut a couple of weeks from my normal recovery period for this problem. I also have a new tendency to tighten up on the left neck/shoulder area and this seems to be a big help to that problem also.
