I have had interstitial cystitis for over a year. It wakes me up several times each night and prevents me from getting solid rest. I normally look young but dark circles and a general haggard appearance have revealed the toll the interrupted sleep has been taking on my body.
When I finally received the IC, your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine "diagnosis," I wanted to find an alternative remedy rather than take prescribed drugs that were either new and experimental, or that were known to make hair fall out. I ordered Cystoprotek along with Healthy Life Harvest Aloe capsules for IC sufferers and Prelief to help cancel out the acid in my foods.
After two and a half weeks, I am finally sleeping again. Last night I slept nine hours straight! New moms and people with IC will understand what this means to me.
My dosage has been two Cystoprotek twice a day, two or three Prelief tabs with acid-forming meals, and aloe caps three times per day. The final dosage of aloe I save for the middle of the night in case I wake up. (I was happy to miss that dose last night!)
One note of caution on the aloe - the manufacturers don't mention this but some sources recommend against taking aloe vera for more than six weeks at a time. It is believed to have a long-term dampening effect on the sexual system and libido if taken without a break. Unfortunately, I couldn't ascertain how long the break should be.
Finally, I am also avoiding foods known to aggravate IC: cranberry, tomato, citrus, coffee and tea, all of which will give me an extra-bad night, Prelief notwithstanding. I seem to do OK with some others like avocado, though. Perhaps it is individual.
I will update in a month or two. BTW, hats off to Amazon. I ordered this through their subscription program, which knocks %15 off the price and comes with free shipping - nice. But imagine my surprise when the two bottles I ordered arrived THE NEXT DAY. Overnight free shipping? Who ever heard of THAT? Needless to say, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Back in 2000 Dr Sant diagnosed me with IC. I went into remission for a number of years after seeing him, but then in 2008 my IC came back and I have been battling with it ever since. Dr. Sant was no longer practicing so I have been going to doctor to doctor with really no relief. Then I got pregnant and had to come off of all of the meds I had been taking amitripolene, elmiron, atarax. At week 7 of my pregnancy I went into a terrible flair that lasted 6 very painful weeks! I was bedridden. One night while doing research on the Internet I came across this product and low and behold Dr. Sant was one of the creators of the supplement cystoprotek along with Dr. Theoharides.
I was determined to try it. I called Dr. Theoharides office and asked if it would be safe to take during pregnancy. Although there have been no studies, based on what I have read and the ingredients and being I was in my second trimester, I tried it and within a week I had HUGE relief. It pulled me out of the flare and I am now 22 weeks and my pain has been VERY manageable. I am actually eating pretty normally as well. Which is amazing and a godsend when you are pregnant. I can't say enough good things about it. I am ordering my second bottle today!
PS. It is a real shame IC doctors do not offer this to their patients. I think it might be because they do not have drug reps out there selling it to doctors.

Customer Review: Cysto Protek Has Been a Life Saver for Interstitial Cystitis

When I was first in serious, unrelenting pain for interstitial cystitis, I learned that the quality of life for those who suffer with it is as poor as can be imagined. I was handed a very long list of foods to avoid, but was told that no good ones could be suggested. That was the message of my primary doctor and gynecologist. Having bladder pain 24/7 drove me out of my mind! And being told that analgesics and products typically good for the bladder would simply worsen the symptoms was a message I found unbearable. Very thankfully, my sister read an article about Cysto Protek, designed to actually improve and restore the bladder wall that had been destroyed, and mailed it to me. A diagram was included. I took it to my doctors and they simply concurred that it couldn't hurt me. As odd as it may seem, within one day of taking the capsules, I experienced great pain relief. Since that day more than a year ago, I have been taking the recommended dosage every day and truly don't want to be without it. All of the irritants - chocolate, sour cream, eggs - you name it - can all be tolerated well, unless I am excessive about any of them. There are still foods I try to avoid, but I experience no bladder pain at all. This product is a miracle for me and sincerely an answer to prayer. I am extremely grateful for it. I wish this product were available 20 years ago. I have been prescribed countless antibiotics over the past 20-25 years for what my urologist said were recurrent UTI's. I since have found another urologist who specializes in women's urological issues. He prescribed Alaven Pharmaceuticals Cystoprotek Soft Gel Capsules, 120-Count Bottle. I started on one capsule daily since April 2009, then increased to two capsules daily in August 2009. My "UTI" symptoms gradually have disappeared. I am using this product and a mild antihistimine at bedtime. Ladies who are diagnosed with recurrent UTI's PLEASE seek a second opinion or insist on a cystoscopy to determine if you have a condition called Interstitial Cystitis (ulcers on the bladder lining) rather than actual urinary tract infections. The antibiotics do NOTHING for IC and are not good for you to be taking over and over again. I am 47 years old and received this diagnosis in April 2009 after suffering needlessly for years. It is all about finding the right doctor. Also, PLEASE do not let your doctor tell you there is nothing that can be done for Interstitial Cystitis. That is not true. I am proof! AND! You do not be led to believe that the only way to treat IC is through medication with unsettling side effects. Let me clarify that I am NOT a urologist. I did however graduate from medical school and sadly developed IC/PBS during my pediatric residency. I have spent a lot time researching this "disease" and it's treatments after finally being correctly diagnosed by my Ob/Gyn. The problem with IC is that no two people have exactly the same course of illness. Furthermore, we are most likely very different in our etiologies. (That's why it's sometimes called Painful Bladder Syndrome, which is Dr. Speak for we really don't know what is going on here...) For me Cystoprotek worked very well. Even much earlier than the weeks that the company says it takes to work. I don't think this is placebo but has more to do with the etiology of my pain. I think the anti-inflammatory portion (quercitin, rutin) of this product can actually work very fast if there isn't a ton of damage to the bladder wall. The GAG (glucosamine, HA, Chondrotin) rebuilders probably are what take a lot longer to get going. So for someone older or with years of damage to the mucosa, it may take some patience with this product. But for me this was a true miracle for symptoms. I wish it was a cure...but until we understand what is actually causing this, symptom control is a real blessing.
