The fit that I was able to get with this guard is about as good as the fit I had from the hard plastic guard my dentist had made for me. My advice would be as follows:
1) Wear the guard for a while before you heat it up to fit it. You'll have a better sense of what you need to bite down on if you wear it for a while.
2) When you do heat it up you're going to need to bite down into some pretty hot plastic. It may even hurt a little and if you're not ready for that then there is no way you're going to get a decent fit.
It is pretty scary to bite down on something that had been a pot of boiling water. But if you do it just right it will mold a really good impression of your upper teeth and even form a vacuum seal. If you get it wrong I think you're out of luck. The box says you can try a second time but I can't see how that can possibly work. I think you get one shot at getting it right.
My dentist pretty much refused to make a soft plastic guard for me so I had to do it myself. He said some people can grind through a soft plastic guard in just a few days. If you have severe bruxism I really don't think this will last you very long.
