Customer Reviews of Digestive Advantage Daily Lactose Defense Formula Capsules, 32-Count Boxes (Pack of 3)Customer Review: Seems to work as stated so far Summary: 4 Stars
Just bought this product and have finished a month with it and it really seems to do what it says it will.
Would recommend this product to anyone having digestive problems as it is not expensive to use.
Customer Review: Safe to have dairy Summary: 4 Stars
It works exactly like it says. Unlike the other pills you have to take every time you have dairy, I take one pill every morning and can have dairy anytime during the day.
Customer Review: IBS Sufferers CAUTION Using This Product Summary: 3 Stars
Here's my story, I'm a young adult with IBS, GERD, and severe lactose intolerance (which aggravates both my IBS and GERD). Needless to say, when I eat dairy, I don't just get bloated and have diarrhea, the pain can sometimes be excruciating. Gas no longer feels less like the pressure and needle-like pain it did as a kid, it now feels more like someone thrust a knife into my stomach and a pressure so excruciating it feels like I'll pass out.
Okay, now that you have my diagnosis and symptomatology, let me explain my experience so other IBS sufferers out know what to expect with this product (when I say "expect," I only mean generally, as everyone's GI will be in a different state as far as bacteria, PH, etc). I used this product as described, 2 pills for one day, then 1 pill, and then gradually reintroduced the lactose-containing products. I found that bloating rarely occurred (this was a sign that the product DID work to some extent, as I always react to dairy with bloating). However, I still have occasional diarrhea that lasts several uncomfortable hours. I also recently had GI-upset along with diarrhea and nausea. I have also noted that depending on the particular type of dairy, some will affect you, others will not (heavy cream, milk, soft cheeses are still problematic).
In conclusion, VERY CAREFULLY recognize all your symptoms with dairy, as well as which dairy products cause worse outcomes. This product did not get rid of all my symptoms with dairy, but it did get rid of the horrible bloating. I am going to purchase my usual lactase tablets to take with all the problematic dairy products listed above, but I might still take them with other dairy as well. As lactase tablets are sometimes not enough, I think this product is good as an agonist to the effectiveness of lactase. However, this product should not be seen as a miracle cure for lactose intolerance as is touted by some reviewers and by the company itself. Always exercise caution when changing your diet. Self-medication is something that we as humans tend to do (sometimes without even thinking about it). At the same rate, you should always err on the side of caution and speak with your doctor about any changes you're making.
Customer Review: Allergic to the new capsules! Summary: 3 Stars
I've taken this product since it was first developed, and loved it, until last year when they changed over to capsules. I am terribly allergic to something in the new formula. I was really sick for months with Bronchitis-like symptoms until we finally figured out it was these capsules! I replicated the symptoms by going off the pills and then later back on several times, just to be sure. Contacted the company and they promised to get back to me in April. I'm still waiting....
If this works for you without side effects - lucky you. I still haven't been able to find a comparable replacement for this product, which really bums me out.
Customer Review: An Honest Caution Summary: 1 Stars
On August 19, 2010, I went to the doctor. My complaint: constant low-grade abdominal discomfort, six to eight months of continuous steatorrhea, diarrhea about once a week, pronounced weakness and getting worse, fatigue, low dips in blood sugar, seventeen pounds of weight loss, insomnia. The doctor gave me a physical exam and requested several batteries of blood tests. They found nothing.
On the day I went to the doctor, I stopped taking Digestive Advantage (DA) since it was the only variable I had to eliminate. I had been using it for at least two years, and initially, I was as impressed as all the reviews are here. However, within twenty-four hours of stopping it, I noticed an improvement in my steatorrhea. I remained off of DA and continually improved. Now, on September 7, 2010, I am gaining weight, my strength is back, I have no abdominal discomfort, and everything is improving. I feel like a new man. I have normal poops again!
For me, long-term use of DA became a health liability. If you are using DA or planning on trying it, please keep my symptoms in the back of your mind. Maybe DA will only affect me in this manner, but I feel obligated to warn others.
I will no longer use it.
UPDATE: OCTOBER 4, 2010: It has been 46 days since I quit taking DA. There has been no return of symptoms, and my health is great. Consequently, there is absolutely, positively no doubt that long-term use of DA interfered with my ability to properly digest food. Also, it is only now that I recognize just how sick I was. The digestion problems came on so gradually that it took me months to notice the full extent of the sickness and several more months to finally suspect DA.
I will be writing a letter to the manufacturer and to the FDA. In my experience, long-term use of DA will inhibit your digestion and make you very sick.
UPDATE: OCTOBER 8, 2010: So I just learned that there actually is a condition called Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). It is a condition in which too much bacteria forms in the small intestine, and it interferes with digestion. The symptoms? Everything I listed in the beginning of this review.
DA is a bacteria (bacillus coagulans). You take it everyday. I'm no doctor, but it is no stretch of the imagination that DA caused me SIBO. You can read about SIBO here: [...]
By the way, I emailed the company on October 4. They have not responded. As for the FDA, I forgot: they do not regulate dietary supplements. It is a buyer-beware market.
Please beware.
