Customer Review: Helps to eliminate outside noise

This was purchased for my adult son who has been using a small fan to generate white noise. It was purchased because I have used the same model for several years and am very happy with it. I am a very light sleeper and need the white noise to be able to sleep through noises inside and outside our home. This unit has 2 volumes and the frequency of the white noise can be adjusted to the listeners preference. It works very well at what is does. No fancy bird, ocean, stream, etc sounds. Just the soothing sound of white noise. I previously had a sound maker that included the above mentioned sounds. The amplification went bad and there was not enough volume to counter the noises around me so I needed to replace it. I was concerned that I wouldn't like this unit as well because there was none of the special noises that unit made. The first night I new I had made the right choice of this unit. It drowned out the other noises and allowed me to sleep through them. It works great and my son loves it, too.
This was a great purchase that was delivered very quickly and in perfect condition. I recommend this seller and product.

My wife and I had been using a desk fan for ambient noise at night, but decided that was probably a waste, so we bought this. Its kind of an odd (in this day and age) product with no digital components, and looks like some sort of european device, but has been great.
It puts out more than enough sound sitting in the opposite corner of our room, and keeps a constant noise for the whole night. It also has a two seperate movable sections to change the the pitch and volume of the sound, as well as a switch that can "up" the sound as well. It blows out a little air at the bottom, but is for the most part pretty well self contained.
We live in the burbs, so its not a particularly loud environment, but I think this could easily cover most outside noise sitting on a bed table if that is what you were looking for. We also have a dog that sleeps a few feet away from it, and has no issues with the noise or any noises that we cannot hear.
Overall, its a great white noise machine, but it obviously only makes white noise. If that is what you are looking for, then this is definately a great product.

I've been using the 980A model for 2 and 1/2 years now, and I have to say this is one of the most useful products I've ever owned. I work the night shift often, so this machine is a crucial part of my bag 'o tricks for sound sleeping during the day. This machine washes out the sound so I can sleep deeply and also so the others awake don't have to tiptoe and whisper around the house. Also it produces a nice natural sound, unlike some of these digital noise machines which I detest. This is a very durable and well-built machine. I've dropped it and kicked it accidentally many times on our hardwood floors. In my opinion it's far better to have the 980A (only $10 more) so that you have the optional higher noise level. I don't use it much but occasionally it can be a real sleep-saver when there is lots of noise. By the way, I've found that this works best for me when placed at head-level and closest to the area where the most sound will leak into the room (like a door, window, or thin apartment wall).
By the way my first machine is still going strong. I need a second so I don't have to keep trading with the baby's room.

I bought my first dual-speed Sleep Mate in 1977 for $30.00 and have used it nearly every night since then. Originally purchased to help with the general all around noise of a late night party person that lived behind me, the Sleep Mate is invaluable. It soothingly 'helps to erase' taps that drip, clocks that tick, barking dogs, snorers in other rooms, neighbors' stereos, even bouncing basketballs at midnight at the playground across the street. The 31 year old original model is still working fine. Only because the botton "sponge" layer has finally dried to a point of starting to crumble into dust did I decide to spring for a new model. It is compact enough that I have even taken it when I have had to travel and stay in a hotel room for a few weeks. Also have noticed that the local Red Cross had one set up in an interview 'cubicle' at a blood donation site to protect confidentiality when answering questions: great idea. I absolutely highly recommend this product. Do not hesitate if you need something to help you 'lightly and comfortably' get rid of the everyday noises around you. This is a top-shelf product. I tend to be a light sleeper in the mornings and this has allowed me to sleep in with a better quality of sleep. We used to use a fan but it didn't work as well and sometimes made an annoying and rhythmic vibration sound that always managed to distract me from sleeping and somehow focus on the vibration sound. This machine is a wonder. I have used it for only a few weeks and have already purchased one for our son, who is a very light sleeper. He normally wakes up to the sound of his dad getting up and ready for work but this provides enough white noise where he doesn't wake up to his dad's noise anymore. It even allows him to sleep through the very noisy snowplows in the wee hours of the night. I don't know exactly how to describe how it works but in my personal opinion it doesn't so much cover up or block noise so much as it provides an even and soothing noise that keeps your mind "engaged" so it doesn't hear the other noises. It's almost like it purposely distracts the mind on a continuous level so that nothing else can break in and distract it. I don't know but I can say it works.
