Customer Review: Great for training an infant to latch properly and to nurse

When my son was born, he didn't latch on well and the nurses gave him bottles at the hospital that were extremely fast flowing. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days with him and he just didn't want to work to breastfeed when he could easily get milk from a bottle. I went home, pumped, changed my son's bottles to Playtex nursers, and continued to offer the breast for a month. I eventually went to a lactation consultant who observed how my son breastfed and said the Playtex nurser was training him to bite to get the milk to come out. She recommended the Evenflo bottle with a Customflow newborn nipple to train my son to suck properly. (Remember this was a child who didn't know how to breastfeed, not a child that was already breastfeeding and was introduced to a Playtex nurser. Playtex may be great for babies that already know how to breastfeed). She told me that the Evenflo bottle was less expensive, easier to clean, and slower flowing than Dr. Browns. The Evenflo Custom Flow newborn nipple made my son work harder for his milk so that when he came to the breast he didn't mind working for it. Within a couple weeks of using this, a Soothie pacifier, a My Brestfriend pillow, proper latch techniques, and a few more visits to the lactation consultant, his latch corrected. Once I got my son to breastfeed, I exclusively breastfed him because I didn't want him to have nipple confusion. Plus after a month and a half of pumping I wanted to rest from my Medela Pump in Style. For others it may be good to continue to offer the bottle so that they can still let others feed their baby. The only thing I didn't like about the Evenflo bottles was that sometimes they did leak, but I was training my son to breastfeed and only used them for a few weeks.
