There are varying degrees/type of this problem. Some can simply put them in properly and they work, however, others (including myself) will need to work at making the ears pop on both THE WAY UP and the way down. To do so: hold your nose and blow gently - start right after take off, keep doing it until cruising altitude and then do the same as soon as the descent begins - as you do, you will feel the ears popping. If they don't pop on the way up, the pressure builds causing the pain/clogging on the way down.
For years I would get a little relief just putting them in (but not much). More relief came when I helped the ears to pop on the way down. But once I also did so on the WAY UP - it has been absolutely incredible - not only NO PAIN, but NO CLOGGING at all!!! Finally I can walk off the plane in complete comfort.
If you tried them before and they didn't help, then try this first before giving up on them - you will not regret it!
