Customer Review: Does a good job in a noisy city

For a long time, my husband wanted to get a white noise machine to help block out the street noise from our busy city block as well as mask my, um, penchant for loud snoring (he doesn't hear his own; what can I say?). He finally got around to researching machines and settled on this one, even though it was substantially more expensive than its competition here on Amazon. Well, it works, and it works well, for its intended purpose. We tried the various sounds (rainfall; nature; etc.) but found that the actual "white noise" setting works best. We like the fact that you can set the volume control and the pitch to achieve a soothing sound. The response feature -- where a microphone picks up ambient sounds like coughing and snoring and adjusts the volume accordingly -- actually works nicely. I bought an Ecotones Duet to help me sleep. I had read about Ecotones in a New York Times article, but only recently found that it was carried on Amazon.
I occasionally have trouble getting to sleep and sleeping pills leave me groggy in the morning. My Duet does the trick. For the last several nights, I have fallen asleep in 20 minutes or so. Of course since there are no drugs, there are no more groggy mornings.
The sounds that help me sleep the most are the evening meadow and the babbling brook. The ocean is also nice, but I haven't tried it yet at night. The noise masking feature works well although that is not why I bought the unit.
Last year I tried the Brookstone machine, but the sounds quality was so horrible that I turned it off after 10 minutes or so. Duet creates an absolutely believable naturescape. I like it.

Our neighbors heating system makes a very loud pulsating humming sound which is heard in my bedroom. This sound made it impossible to sleep or even remain in the room. The Sound & Sleep (Ecotones Duet) Adaptive Sound Machine totally blocks the noise and replaces it with the soothing sound of a rain storm, allowing me to relax and fall asleep(and remain asleep). I particularly like the rain with thunder. If I hadn't found this machine, I think I would still be awake. Does what is says it will do. There are plenty of sounds to chose from. The sounds are high quality. The slightest sound increase in the room and the machine automatically adjusts. I highly recommend this product. It is awesome. I purchased this machine in hopes of helping my 9 yr old get some sleep...he is borderline Asperger's and has never slept well. His inability to get to sleep easily (or quickly) has gotten worse and worse over the years and we've tried lots of different things to help him get to sleep, to no avail. He just can't seem to "shut down" his mind long enough to get to sleep. (We generally spend 3-4 hours each night "trying" to get to sleep.) I purchased this machine based on the good reviews, fingers crossed. Simply put, it worked and he fell asleep in 20 minutes the first night. We had to go thru each sound and he picked which one to use. We have used it every night since; he gets to sleep quickly and is sleeping more soundly. This product has saved my sanity. If you can't sleep, life is just hard. I live in an apartment and this machine effectively covers the noise of late night TV watching by my neighbors. It evens out the noise in my room and allows me to enter a peaceful, deep sleep. It's funny, when I wake up in the middle of the night to pee I don't hear it at first, I have to remind myself it's on and then I hear it. It's like my brain uses it as background noise and it filters out all the other background noise. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MACHINE! It has so many "sound stories", my favorites are the heavy rain, the meadow and the ocean. It's nice to have choices! I don't have a lot of money, but I was happy to spend $130 on this item. It works. It really does!
