Full disclosure: the guy who invented the Everblade is a good friend of mine.
Before my review - first this: Many years ago, it was my pleasure to meet the guy who wrote the 1970's classic of pseudo-science, "Pyramid Power," Max Toth. At the time, he was a hospital administrator in New York, and I was a production assistant working on a Movie of the Week, starring Art Carney, which was being shot on Roosevelt Island in a closed wing of Coler Hospital. It was the 80's, I was just a twenty-something; a no account kid -- but Max was good enough to let on to me, that he'd had a life beyond his administrative suit and tie; and to prove it, he gave me a signed paperback copy of his best seller. I still have it, and I admit I cherish it like a shrunken head - a quirky artifact from an exotic isle: the `70's.
What has this got to do with Everblade, a device that is purported to keep your razor sharp? If you are old enough to remember "Pyramid Power," then you will also remember that the "power" harnessed by the geometry of a pyramid was supposed to sharpen razor blades. I vaguely remember a guy appearing on the Mike Douglas Show with a small pyramid, with which he did I don't remember what -- maybe sharpen Ginsu knives or some nonsense, I can't recall.
Fuller disclosure: Of all my friends, if there is one guy out of all of them, who if you told me he said, "If you look at the Aztec temples, you can see humanoid figures carved in the stone that look like ancient astronauts. Think about it! Extraterrestrials must have visited our planet dozens of times throughout the history of mankind," then I would tell you, "Yeah, that sounds like him, all right. That's probably my friend who invented Everblade."
I think you can understand why, then, when I was told by the inventor of Everblade that his device keeps razors sharp, by way of principles of magnetism, that it was all I could do to keep from laughing out loud. My friend the inventor is too young to remember "Pyramid Power", let alone the Mike Douglas show. And so unbeknownst to him, when he mentioned "magnetism" to me, he might as well have been talking the shakras of Tantric Yoga -- because when I hear "magnetism" what comes to mind is every wack-a-doodle pseudo-scientific scheme since Mesmer, up through my pal Max Toth. So when my young friend told me he had invented a razor sharpener, that works on regular blades and disposable blades, and has no mechanical parts, (and this he told me with a straight face), the first person who popped into my mind was Mr. Haney on "Green Acres" trying to sell Mr. Douglas some sort of newfangled device for his farm.
Having said all that - I tell you the Everblade actually works. The inventor gave me one this past Winter. I put off using it, because frankly, I thought it was some New Age flakiness like keeping crystals in your pants pockets to increase your virility or make headaches go away. I am all too happy to admit that I was totally off base. And I am extremely happy to no longer be paying ridiculous prices for blades, so often.
I use a Gillette Quatro. I put a new blade in my razor this Spring 2010. And on account of stowing the razor on the Everblade, I am still getting a smooth, close shave from that razor, in Fall 2010. As I write this (10/04/10), that blade is still working perfectly for me.
They guarantee your money back, so what do you have to lose? If you are like me you'll say you have plenty to lose. If the thing is a rip off piece of crap that doesn't work, then I have to lose the time, and the pain in the backside of having to ship the thing back. But you won't be shipping it back. Like me, you will be laughing to yourself and saying, "Holy cow, I can't believe it - this dang thing actually works!"
