Customer Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer with Silver Ion Antimicrobial HeadCustomer Review: Accurate and FAST! Summary: 5 Stars
I did hesitate to order this based on earlier reviews, but my oncologist's nurse uses one, and she had nothing but great things to say about it. So, I decided to give it a try. When you are doing chemo and radiation, you have to be very wary of infections, as your ability to fight them is diminished. Thus you SHOULD check your temp at least once a day. I had been using an oral thermometer.. digital, and it was continuing to read low.
When this arrived, I popped the batteries in, and without bothering to read the instructions... I can be such a geek...proceeded to run it across my forehead. I had a temp of 78. Ok, let's try this again...now it was 84. Yes, time to get out the instructions. :)
After REMOVING THE COVER (hehheh), I used it again and my reading was 98.2. That's pretty much in my personal normal range. I've not gotten any more bizarre readings since actually reading and following the instructions for use. I love the speed in getting my temp reading; no more sitting around for a few minutes waiting on the oral, which is a pain if you're not able to breathe well through your nose.
In a nutshell, this temporal thermometer works wonderfully, quickly, and accurately if you take the time to do it right... and read the instructions before using it. :D
Customer Review: Works if you use it according to instructions Summary: 5 Stars
The instructions want you to slide this across the forehead, maintaining constant contact with the skin. This may be hard to do if the skin is sweaty or sticky at all (which it tends to be if you are sick). That's why they want you to take three readings, and use the highest reading. The lower readings were probably results of you accidentally losing contact with the skin, letting cooler air touch the sensor. I got it because when my family has been sick, I got really tired of checking temps multiple times a day using the under-tongue method with the disposable plastic covers for a traditional oral thermometer. This is quick and easy. Also, it's what they use at the birth center where my friends have had babies, to check mom and baby's temps after the birth. You're supposed to check them every thirty minutes for several hours, since babies cannot regulate their temperature for the first twenty four hours. It would be super annoying the check a newborn's temperature every 30-60 minutes any other way than this thermometer!
Customer Review: Great product, but Kaiser will not accept temporal readings Summary: 5 Stars
Our 4 yr old son recently had a fever. We used the Exergen thermometer and got 104.2-104.4 from multiple readings. Very precise. We called up Kaiser's advice line and was told that they do not accept temporal thermometer readings. What? Ok, so we grab the 3 digital thermometers that we already have and take our son's temp. We got 101, 102, and 103 among the 3 thermometers from multiple readings. For any one of the digital thermometers the precision was no where close to the Exergen, plus or minus one degree. If anything the Exergen should read lower than the old style digital thermometers, not higher.
On our next visit to the doctor we plan on bringing our Exergen to see if it matches the temp taken by the hospital thermometer.
We will still use the Exergen and if it comes time to call Kaiser when his temp is around 104 or so, we'll bust out the "more accurate" old style digital thermometers. Hopefully Kaiser will revise this policy.
Customer Review: Don't know how I ever lived without it! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw the school nurse use this on my child and thought it would be a better way to take a quick temperature. I have been using the thermometer for several months now and I'll never go back to a regular thermometer. It is easy to use after a little practice. You run it across your forehead and down the side of your face, or you can just hold it behind your earlobe for a few seconds. Make sure you don't press the button until the scanner is pressed against your skin. Then let go of the button before you lift the scanner - you don't want the thermometer to average in the air temperature.
I would like to see one improvement - a backlight on the temperature display. I have taken my children's temperature while they were sleeping (another plus) and I had to either turn on the light or go into the hall to see the reading. But I gave it 5 stars anyway because it still only takes 20 seconds to get the temperature.
Customer Review: Incredibly Accurate Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, an accurate thermometer! Very fast readings. I was a little intimidated by the somewhat lengthy instructions, but after reading them & then using the thermometer I was glad I had read the information. It is easy to use (provided you use it correctly, hence those instructions) & so incredibly accurate that it is second best to a rectal temperature reading (which is the most preferred by doctors because it is the most accurate method).
I have bought so many different brands of oral thermometers & also have an ear one. They are all erratic & unreliable with back-to-back readings ranging spans of 10 degrees. I bought this one while I was shopping for an old fashioned mercury thermometer like my mom used when I was a kid. Apparently mercury ones are obsolete now. But that's okay, because this is undoubtedly easier to use, faster & easier to read. The best purchase I've made in a long time!
