This royal jelly WAS NOT packaged as described in the ad and photo. It was stuffed into a torn plastic bag and jammed down into another, unlabeled plastic jar to prevent the contents of the torn plastic bag from spilling. The outer plastic jar was a soft, and cloudy sort of plastic - nothing like the photo, (which is of a clear and hard plastic).
It was a huge mess, as the jelly was half in the bag and half in the jar, making it impossible to get the jelly out cleanly. It amounted to a jar of jelly with a plastic bag floating around in it! The jelly tasted like plastic to me and since I don't know what fresh royal jelly is supposed to taste like, I just have to hope that the plastic-y taste is all in my head and that it has not leached plastic from its packaging.
I didn't want to send it back if it is supposed to taste that way and so I contacted the seller to ask some questions. He was very defensive when I asked him if the taste that I interpreted as "off" and "plastic-y" was normal. He never really answered me directly, but did say that royal jelly is not sweet and that it has a strong taste. He assured me that the plastic bag was a food grade package. HE OFFERED TO LET ME RETURN THE ITEM FOR A REFUND, but I decided to keep it, thinking that the taste might be that I don't really know what royal jelly tastes like.
The packaging was clean, and so I had no qualms about it being sanitary. I re-packaged it into a glass mason jar, which caused me to lose some of the jelly. I am counting this as a VERY EXPENSIVE learning experience, and next time I will buy a different brand of royal jelly.
I am giving this item two stars instead of one for three reasons:
1. I am keeping the item and hoping for the best - anything that rated only one star I would definately not keep.
2. The seller did offer to take it back. It was my own choice to keep it because I didn't want to pay return shipping.
3. I am inexperienced with royal jelly and believe it it possible that it is supposed to taste like this. I tried to find a beekeeper locally who could sample the product and tell me if it is good quality, but I have discovered that beekeepers who harvest royal jelly are rare. I cannot find anyone who knows more than I do, so I will have to use this a compare it to another brand next time.
