Customer Reviews of HappyLight 4500 Sunshine Supplement Light SystemCustomer Review: Necessity for the unhappy cubicle monkey. Summary: 5 Stars
No...it's not pretty. AND it's not a 10,000 lux lamp designed specifically for SAD (I also have one of those) but for what it is...it's perfect.
I work in an office with no windows. I've been working in an office with no windows for the last nine years. Every winter...work becomes nearly unbearable. The dry, overheated office air. No sunlight. Getting up in the dark...leaving from work in the dark. For anyone who suffers from SAD...it's like slowly descending into hell over the course of three months.
I use a 10,000 lux light in the morning with my coffee. It helps with the worst symptoms...and allows me to get to sleep at night. But it really doesn't give me the perk in the day like getting natural light does.
The Verilux light is just what it claims to be...supplemental sunlight. I start work at 8:30 in the morning...and keep it on the "high" setting until lunchtime. (When weather permitting, I try my best to spend at least a few minutes outside.) Then I turn it on the "low" setting for the rest of the afternoon.
The effect that it has had on my productivity is dramatic. My eyes stay open at my desk. I can concentrate. I am no longer contemplating grabbing my belongings and making a mad dash for my car in the middle of the day. (And unemployment.) I keep the light behind...and about 45 degrees to the right of my computer screen...so the light is almost in my peripheral vision...and have had no problems with eye strain. To the contrary...I find that I have a greater ability to focus...and need to take fewer breaks.
The only cons are that the light is a little flimsy. If you have a dedicated desk and can just set it up and leave it...then it's totally worth it. If you need something portable...one of the smaller LED lights will hold up better. And it's NOT a SAD light. But it IS a great supplement to the outdoors for those of us tied to a desk all day.
Customer Review: HappyLight shines so bright that the rest of the world looks drab by comparison... Summary: 5 Stars
Last week, I placed the Verilux HappyLight in my cubicle at work. We had recently played musical cubes in my office, and I found myself without any view of a window for the first time in 3 years. Fearing that the lack of natural light during the day and the rapidly approaching early sunsets of autumn and winter would drive me to depression, I decided to give this light a try.
I set it up on my desk as directed, about a foot from my face, and turned it on. My goodness, was it ever bright! It took a little while for my eyes to adjust to its brightness. I used to think that my monitors glowed brightly, but they, like everything else, seemed drab by comparison.
A few hours into that first workday with the HappyLight, I heard a knock on the entrance to my cubicle. A small child in a gauzy white dress stood there, staring wide-eyed at my HappyLight.
"I saw the light from down the hall," the child said. "What is it? Is it ... an angel?"
"No," I replied. "It's just a very bright light. See?" I moved over a little bit so the little girl could take a closer look.
She peered at the light very carefully for a few moments.
"You're wrong," the girl finally said. "Look again. It *is* an angel."
I peered a bit more closely into the white light, looking for whatever it was that this little girl clearly saw. I turned to look back at her questioningly, but she was gone.
"Wait!" I shouted, standing up and peering out of my cube. But no one was there. Had the child been there at all? Had she disappeared into thin air?
I shrugged, feeling a bit bewildered, and hunkered back down at my desk, basking in the ethereal glow of my HappyLight.
Customer Review: An Utter de-Light Summary: 5 Stars
A native Californian, I was distraught to be stuck in Seattle for work. After 4 months of winter, my boyfriend noticed the long dark days were having a distinct effect on my mood. I was tired, withdrawn, and lacking energy. By 3 in the afternoon, I was ready for a nap.
He bought me the HappyLight.
I packed the little box into my rolly suitcase and brought it with me to Seattle. While plastic, it survived the trip easily. It now lives on my desk in the hotel room, casting its glow over my laptop where I eat and play each evening. It does not generate an excess of heat (though if you leave it on for hours upon hours the back gets warm) but casts the promised "full spectrum" - noticeably different from the dim yellow bulbs of the hotel or the nasty fluorescent beasts at work. It does not hurt my eyes or distract from my laptop or tv screen.
It's been two full days. I'm not kidding; I have had the HappyLight beside me for the last two nights and have noticed a significant difference in my mood.
I am one very happy customer.
Customer Review: Revvs me up for the day! Summary: 5 Stars
I actually bought this from the Verilux website (sorry Amazon...) but wanted to put in my 2 cents. Although I agree with other reviewers that it seems quite cheaply made, it's handy, lightweight and compact. Plus Verilux lets you return it for a full refund (postage paid) within 30 days if it doesn't work. The woman I spoke to at Verilux said I'd know within the first hour if it would work for me. I've been using it for just a few days, but it helps give me energy and seems to make me happier. Not that I've been depressed really (lots of good things in my life just now). But it's been a dreary winter so far and I was finding myself just dragging around and feeling generally unmotivated and very irritated. PLUS, all I want to do is eat carbs (sugar!) all day. Hence the dreaded holiday/winter weight gain! Since using this lamp, all my symptoms have eased a bit. Which is pretty amazing considering it's nearly Christmas -- a hyper stressful time for me and no opportunity to do much exercise! I say try it and see. You've got nothing to lose.
Customer Review: Happy Happy Summary: 5 Stars
I searched these reviews for good advice on which light to choose. After much debate, I finally landed on this one. I couldn't be happier with it, and use it daily.
To those of you bemoaning that it is cheaply made, I'm not sure what you were looking for. A steel reinforced desk lamp??? I'm pretty tough on my things, and was worried this might be too delicate, but it isn't. It's plenty sturdy for what it is - a desk light. It's not flimsy at all, it stands perfectly straight up, it emits a great light, and the control is solid. I wish I hadn't listened to all those folks complaining about the quality of the design and materials. I'm happy to say I found their advice entirely incorrect.
As for the quality of the light being emitted, I'm very happy with it. It is a bit bright at first, but that's part of how and why it works. I got used to it just fine in a half hour or so.
Don't spend a fortune on other lights. This little number is exactly what you are looking for!
