Customer Reviews of Hearos Earplugs High Fidelity Series for Comfortable Long Term Use with Free Case, 1 PackageCustomer Review: A little prevention now will pay off later Summary: 5 Stars
It is hard to get excited about ear plugs. Hearing protection is the last thing on most of our minds when we go see bands or use loud machinery around the house.
I found these ear plugs one day while I was searching for something to help better protect my hearing. The need for "Musician" type earplugs came to me when my grandparents who are in their 80's were complaining about how much decent hearing aid's cost them. They paid over 5k for each of them and that was for a middle of the road model. The batteries for them extended the cost even more. I do not want to be in their situation when I am their age so I decided to protect my hearing. They never played in a band as I do, so I figure that if I keep going on my path, I will probably be worse off than they are.
I play in a rock band and wanted to find some ear protection that still let me hear the full spectrum of high and low frequencies. I used traditional ear plugs in years past but always took them out because they cut out the high end which affected my playing. I was aware of the custom ear protection devices that a doctor will make with an actual mold of your ear. I know those really work well but I was not about to shell out $300 for that. Not that I couldn't pay $300 for protecting my ears, I just would rather try these Hearos filters for less than $20 first and see how it went.
I tried them with my band and let me tell you, wow what a difference. The Hearos are not ear plugs in the traditional sense. They are more like sound attenuators. They let you hear the same highs and lows but they simply lower the volume for you. It was amazing how much they quieted things down. The first night I wore them at band practice I was taking them in and out just to hear the difference. What I found was that I was able to hear more details of the band with them in. I am not an Audiologist but I understand pretty well from a medical perspective how the ear works. I think what was happening is that my band was so loud in the past that it was distorting in my head where I could not make out all the details. The cymbals from our drummer sounded crisp and full, the tambourine sounded alive with the Hearos in. All the band sounds were all of a sudden equal, just like a perfect mix on a record.
I left the next couple practices after wearing the Hearos filters with no ringing at all in my ears. I usually would get in my car and once the door closed I would hear ringing and the radio would be muffled. Not anymore! I also found that I was less tired after band practice. It may sound strange but the reduced volume of the band made me feel better after practice. You have to try it to know what I mean. It is such a nice feeling to leave practice or a live show and not hear the ringing.
I have since turned 2 of my band members onto this product. They love them. The comment I always hear is that they wish they found them earlier. The only thing I would advise band members to watch out for when they wear the Hearos is to watch their volumes. At first I tended to turn up my guitar amp a little louder than normal and I was overpowering the band. The sound reduction was so good I didn't realize how loud I was. None of my band member who were wearing the Hearos complained though! I would suggest that you take them out briefly from time to time just to make sure you are blending well with the rest of the band.
I also use the Hearos around the house for using power tools or vaccumming. My saws can get loud using them all day.
The Hearos are so small that no one has ever noticed that I have them in when I perform live except my bandmates that are close in proximity.
As I said earlier it is hard to get excited about earplugs but I feel that a little prevention now will help you as you get older. You won't regret trying these Hearos out. If they don't work for you, you aren't out a lot of money anyway so it is worth a shot.
I may one day try the custom ear molds but I highly doubt they would be that much better than the Hearos filters for a lot less money. I could use that $300 to buy more guitar gadgets. Yeah, that's it!
Try they, you will thank me later.
