It depends on a person's body shape. For me, if I slept on my back, due to perhaps a large butt or head shape, who knows, something would happen in my back and not only cause severe pain when I moved, but cause my legs to fall asleep. May be related to a broken tailbone when I was 9, but that's another story. I'd have to move ver-r-r-r-y slowly to move off and let the pain abate and the circulation restore enough to get out of bed. Annoying. Putting a pillow under my knees solved this, but the knee pillow required me to wake up and adjust it if I rolled from left to right side.
Putting this pillow under my neck keeps my head at the right angle whether on my back or either side. No waking up to roll over, and no back pain! I tried a dozen pillows spending up to $60, and they were of course all alike. I even travel with this pillow, it compresses nicely. Memory foam gets softer with time, I've used mine 8+ hours per day for 3 years and am ready for a second one.
