I've been looking for a good basal thermometer ever since Basal Digital Thermometer let me down with its constant beeping, so I purchased this Kaz thermometer on the grounds that it is the only totally silent model I can find, but unfortunately the lack of extras means I won't get much use from it.
So here's how this works: the thermometer has a single "On/Off" button and when you turn it on, the display comes to life and you jam it in your mouth - that's it. The write-up here claims that the thermometer has a memory function to show your last temperature, but the write-up is either mistaken or mine came fresh from the factory with a low battery because there's no showing the last temperature on MY model - when you turn it on, you just get a nice big 'L' (low battery?) on the display.
Now is as good a time as any to note that, according to the directions, you CANNOT replace the battery. So this is (a) not an eco-conscious choice, (b) not an economical choice, and (c) irritating as all get-out, given that the battery may well be dead fresh out of the factory.
Moving on, once you jam the stick in your mouth, it takes a full minute to get a temperature reading. Since there's no backlight (bad!) and no beeping (good!), the only way you'll know if the reading is done is if you can angle a mirror such that you can tell if the little 'F' is still flickering on the display. Once you have a complete reading, the thermometer stays on for a long time unless you manually shut it off - the booklet claims you have a full ten minutes before automatic shut-off, so if you're just wanting to take a basal reading in bed, and then get up and go record the reading, then this little product might work perfectly for you.
For me, a memory function and backlight were just two crucial, so I went with the Safety 1st brand, but it was a close call. I really do like that this Kaz model is silent, but I am irked at the whole non-replaceable battery thing. The booklet stupidly claims that you can get several thousand readings out of one battery, but (a) shelf-life DOES matter with batteries and who knows how old this one I just received is and (b) if you're basal reading once or more a day, that's still ~350 readings a year.
