Green Tea and Weight Loss - Losing Weight the Natural Way!

Green tea weight loss has become a hot topic of discussion in the weight loss and medical circles. The documented positive effects of green tea on losing weight has caused more and more people looking to lose weight to seek out this ancient brew.

However does green tea actually help you to lose weight? Is this all simply hype or is there something real and factual to the stories? Well here are some interesting facts about drinking green tea and weight loss.

Advantages of Drinking Green Tea for Weight Loss

Green tea and boosting your metabolism - Recently the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported its findings on the effect of drinking green tea and weight loss. Researchers found that green tea extract actually increased the metabolism of green tea drinkers dramatically. So much so that in a 24 hour period the average metabolic rate of the green tea drinkers in the studies increased by over 4%. Green tea possesses extremely high levels of catechin polyphenols. These substances actually aid your body in increasing its ability to oxidize fat and speeds up thermo-genesis which is how quickly your body burns off excess fat and calories. This is a critical factor of drinking green tea and weight loss.

Researchers also found that green tea regulates glucose leevels. Green tea helps to keep your blood levels stable after each meal and prevents spikes in insulin. This means less fat is stored after each meal while drinking green tea. This is directly tied to the active ingredients called catechins found in high levels in green tea.

Green tea also reduces your cravings and appetite - In a recent study it was found that green tea extracts caused rats to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight after a week of being injected with green tea extract. These rats were injected daily with the green tea extract. As a result the rats consumed up to 60 percent less food after a week. It's believed that this is tied directly to green tea's ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

Green Tea and Weight Loss - The Bottom Line

Green tea helps you lose weight by increasing your metabolic rate boosting your body's ability to burn excess calories and stored fat. Green tea also regulates your blood sugar levels and suppresses your appetite. Green tea is also a far superior choice to drinking coffee each day. So overall the stories are indeed true in regards to the power of drinking green tea and weight loss.

How to Brew Green Tea ?
Although it's not hard to do, there are a few things to be considered when brewing green tea

Water quality...
Good quality water is essential for making a good cup of green tea. Make sure you're using good water.

Water temperature...
This is where most mistakes are made. Brew your green tea too hot, and your tea will become bitter. The correct temperature does vary depending on the green tea, but for most it is around 165-170 degrees F (73-76 C.)

Proportion of green tea to water...
Most of our green teas are brewed at 1 heaping teaspoon (5 grams) per 8 ounces of water, but this can vary depending on the tea.

Brew time...
Generally, two minutes is all it takes Any longer, and the taste may becomes too bitter. Also, it's very important to NOT stir, shake, or mix the tea.

Allowing the tea room to expand...
This is rather important. Chinese green tea is compact - it needs room to expand. Tea balls do not work well at all. You'll be much better off using a Japanese teapot that was designed with green tea in mind. It is a one time investment of between $30-$100, and will make your life so much easier.

Take a good look at the inside of this green tea teapot to the left, made in Japan. The infuser screen goes all the way around the inside of the teapot, allowing the tea leaves to expand fully. This is the best kind to use. These teapots are rather small, about the size of a grapefruit, and usually hold 8-13 ounces or so.

Weight Loss Benefits of Green Tea

If you drink green tea you can-
* Lower Cholesterol
* Increase Thermogenesis (the body's rate of burning calories)
* Enhance fat oxidation

Burns Fat Naturally
Green tea contains high concentrations of catechin polyphenols. These compounds work with other chemicals to intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis, where heat is created in the body by burning fuels such as fat. Drinking Japanese green tea regularly will increase your metabolism and help burn fat safely and naturally.

Lowers cholesterol and increases energy expenditure
Green tea also causes carbohydrates to be released slowly, preventing sharp increases in blood-insulin levels. This promotes the burning of fat.
The thermogenic effect was originally attributed to its caffeine content. However, green tea stimulates brown fat thermogenesis far greater than a comparable amount of pure caffeine. It appears that the catechin-polyphenols, in particular epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and caffeine that naturally occur in green tea work synergistically to stimulate thermogenesis and augment and prolong sympathetic stimulation of thermogenesis. It has been shown to increase 24-hour energy expenditure and fat oxidation (caffeine only increases metabolism during the time you take it).

Weight is gained as excess sugars and fats are stored in the body as fat cells. Green tea catechins can help prevent obesity by inhibiting the movement of glucose in fat cells. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been found to be especially effective. There is now good evidence that green tea catechins are related to reductions in body fat.
EGCG is a powerful antioxidant with positive qualities but a balanced diet and exercise, lots of it, are of paramount importance to any weight reduction program.

Green Tea and Weight Loss
by: Kathryn O'Neill

There's recently been a LOT in the weight loss news concerning green tea.
Green tea's weight loss effects have been causing more and more people to start sipping the ancient Chinese or Japanese brew.

But just how does green tea help you lose weight? And does it really work or is it all just hype? This article gives you the real facts about drinking green tea to lose weight.
Advantages of Drinking Green Tea for Weight Loss:

1) Green tea revs up your metabolism

A study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a metabolism `boost').
The researchers also concluded that that over a 24-hour period, green tea extract increases the metabolic rate by 4%. These effects are probably due to the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols found in green tea. These work to help intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis (the rate at which your body burns calories).

2) Green tea inhibits fat absorption and helps glucose regulation
Experts tell us that the catechins in green tea help to inhibit the movement of glucose into fat cells. Green tea may also act as al glucose regulator. It helps to slow the rise in blood sugar after a meal. This prevents high insulin spikes (lots of insulin promotes fat storage) and the subsequent fat storage.

3) Green tea may help reduce appetite
Scientists at the University of Chicago found that green tea caused rats to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight. Rats injected with a green tea extract lost their appetites and consumed up to 60 percent less food after seven days of daily injections. This may have something to do with the blood sugar regulating effects of green tea.

4) Green tea can help you save calories on your morning brew.
We are a nation hooked on our java. Be it the regular double-cream, double-sugar standard or that mocha, dappa, frappucinno, the calories we ingest just to get our morning caffeine is wreaking havoc on our waistlines.

If you want to save mega-calories in the morning but still get your caffeine fix, try substituting green tea for coffee. Or have a green tea in the afternoon instead of that 700 calorie mocha-chillate dream. You'll definitely notice the difference in your waistline after a few weeks.

So there are 4 ways that green tea can help you with weight loss. But how much do you actually have to drink to get these amazing metabolism boosting effects?

Experts vary but the general consensus seems to be that 3 - 5 cups of green tea per day is optimal. Doing this can help you burn an extra 70 calories per day which amounts to 7 pounds per year. Pretty good for not exercising or cutting calories, right?
However, 3 - 5 cups can be a lot for some people, so you might also want to consider green tea extract, green tea pills or a green tea patch.

Disadvantages of Drinking Green Tea For Weight Loss:
#1) Green tea is not a magic bullet
While some people will tell you that green tea is the be-all-end-all for weight loss success, I think the keyword here is balance. You're not going to eat 5000 calories a day, drink a cup of green tea and make it all go away - it just isn't going to happen. A healthy diet and increased exercise will go a long way in helping you lose weight and keep it off.
#2) Be cautious of the caffeine if you have health problems
For some people that have heart troubles, high blood pressure or stimulant sensitivities, the caffeine in green tea may not be the best idea. If you're worried about the caffeine from green tea, try taking green tea extract. Most green tea extract is made from decaffeinated green tea so you can still get the weight loss benefits without the caffeine.
If you think the caffeine may be a problem, make sure to consult your doctor before starting green tea for weight loss. Also make sure to consult your doctor before starting green tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

*** Bottom Line ***: Green tea helps you with weight loss by boosting your metabolic rate, regulating your blood sugar, suppressing your appetite and giving you something else besides that high calorie, high sugar coffee beverage to drink in the morning. While it's not the magic bullet, it can definitely give you a boost in weight loss and in your overall health!

Customer Review: This is my new favorite tea
Summary: 5 Stars

I've loved Japanese green tea my whole life and have not found one yet that tastes as good as this one at this price, except for cups of tea served in Japanese restaurants. A couple reviews here mentioned how it compares to gourmet green tea. I don't know what classifies a tea as gourmet, unless it's the price, and I don't know if I've ever had such a tea. But this Kirkland tea is so flavorful that I don't see why it matters whether it is gourmet class or not. It only matters that it tastes great, and it smells wonderful too. Even my spouse, who drank green tea only occasionally (and usually prefers Earl Grey), is thrilled with this tea and now drinks it almost every night. Don't worry about finding a better bargain. It's only 19 cents a bag through Amazon, so what difference does it make if you can get it a few pennies cheaper elsewhere? With such a great flavor, it's a bargain at almost any price.

This tea has a wonderful grassy flavor -- the mark of a good green tea -- that is missing in so many commercial brands, and even many Asian brands you find here (and the tea is actually green, which isn't the case with all "green" teas). Chinese green tea looks and tastes different from Japanese green tea -- less green and less grassy in flavor. The box says there is green tea powder added, which must be part of the reason for the rich flavor. The instructions say to add the excess powder inside the wrapper to your water. Generally, over-steeping green tea leaves it tasting bitter, but this one doesn't seem to get bitter when I do (any purist will tell you that adding sweetener or lemon to green tea is just not acceptable ;-).

Each teabag is individually wrapped in a plastic pouch. The teabags themselves are nylon, which is stronger than the usual paper and less likely to tear. I admit I am a bit conflicted about buying this tea because I love the flavor, but the environmentalist in me is disappointed the bags and wrappers are not biodegradable. I also wonder if I should be concerned that it's not organic, but I may never find out if it matters.

Customer Review: Kirkland Japanese Green Tea
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been drinking Kirkland branded green tea for at least three years. It used to be packaged in a yellow box with yellow envelopes inside. The instructions on the back of those envelopes said to steep the tea in boiling water for 30 seconds.

This differs from the current green colored box and its envelopes. Also, the brewing instructions are different. The new tea is identified as Matcha and the (different and confusing) brewing instructions are:

"Insert tea bag, pour 80°C (176°F) hot water. Steep 30 seconds, shake tea bag and remove. Empty remaining Matcha from outer envelope to surface of tea."

I interpreted this as meaning: Cut the tea bag open and shake the soggy ground tea leaves that are in the tea bag into your cup. My wife read this as shaking whatever Matcha was left in the (green) outer envelope (rather than the tea bag)into the cup. For the cup of tea I just brewed, there was no remaining Matcha in the envelope. Consequently, I cut open the nylon envelope and poured the soggy matcha into the cup. It did taste stronger, but not unpleasantly bitter. In fact, it was very good.

Customer Review: Taste to value ratio is fine, surprizingly good taste!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never been a friend of tea in bags, but this one I really like. And only one tea I drink in bags without complaining.
(And I should add the bags are nice nylon and separately packaged). Of course if you drink the very expensive green Japanese loose teas, prepared in a traditional way, this one is of course not way such a great taste as expensive macha with bright green color.

But I am not such gourmet. Nor I have been in Japan. This one is good for me, nice taste, ( slightly dry green and has sweetness of rice), nice color. Of course the water can't be too hot, or bag shouldn't stay for longer than 30 sec.And water needs to be filtered for better taste,as water can spoil so much.
The price for the taste is in my opinion really good, and this one is my daily tea,it is not fancy, yet really good. This matcha is a blend, so, we don't know from which region it comes, is generic, but I don't mind.
Again, it is not a gourmet tea, and I gave five stars for being special in its class: inexpensive teas in bags. Also excellent tea to introduce green tea haters into drinking green ones. (Many people don't like certain aftertastes, this one is mellow enough and fresh tasting).
