Customer Review: Not the easiest to use, but accuracy is superb

In general mercury blood pressure monitors are considered to be the gold standard when it comes to accuracy. It's not as easy to use as electronic models where you just put on the cuff and push a button, but I am not convinced about the accuracy of the electronic models. I've owned models made by Sunbeam and Omron in the past, and both models gave me readings that were way too low. This was verified when I brought the monitors into the doctor's office. By the way, I highly recommend this practice. You may be surprised at the accuracy. For example, my Omron gave a reading of 108/77 while my doctor's unit gave a reading of 120/90. I felt that I needed a more accurate monitor or else I'd get a false sense of security. I purchased an aneroid model after deciding to give up on the electronic models. The aneroid model did correspond to the readings at my doctor's office, but the accuracy started declining about after a year of use. I heard that it's normal, and regular calibration is needed. Another problem that I had with the aneroid model was that the needle on the dial jumped quite a bit with each heart beat. I was very delighted to find a mercury monitor here at a VERY reasonable price. The accuracy of this monitor is first rate. The mercury column does not jump around when the pulse starts. My father has used his mercury column for over 20 years. (My family has quite a history of hypertension.)The drawbacks:
As with all manual models, coordination is required if you are going to be using it by yourself. A D-ring on the cuff would make putting on the cuff easier. If you are hard of hearing, this is not a good choice because it does require the use of a stethescope (which is not included with the monitor).
The bottom line is that if you value accuracy over convenience/easy-of-use, get this monitor. As you might have guessed by now, I do heavily value accuracy. It's the only way I can tell that my blood pressure is being adequately controlled.
