This fetoscope is inexpensive and easy to use, and long enough for the mother to use on herself. It takes a bit of practice to find the baby's heartbeat, especially in the second trimester. Third trimester will be much easier. My advice for those who have trouble is to listen first thing in the morning before eating anything. Digestive sounds can make the heart tones difficult to hear earlier in the pregnancy. Also be sure to listen in all four quadrants of the uterus, and directly above the pubic bone. As the baby gets bigger, and you're better able to palpate for body parts, you will have better luck locating heart tones by listening at the baby's upper back - feel for the head and butt (the two big, firm lumps), and listen between them. If you have an anterior placenta, if you're before 20 weeks, or if the baby is posterior, you may have more trouble finding it. Just be patient and keep practicing!

We bought the stethoscope to monitor the heart rates of our twins in the second trimester. Now, even into the third, it is very difficult to find the heartbeats, and only my husband can hear them. I can't hear anything in it myself. However, it has been comforting to me even for him to be able to use it and hear the heartbeats when we had an issue, but we don't feel comfortable using it to make any judgements about the babies' conditions. The plus is that some research has shown that excessive use of a doppler can be detrimental to the baby. We decided this can work well with a doppler to teach you what the heartbeat should sound like, so you can use this safely and only have to use the doppler if you really think there is a problem with the baby.

We have a fetal Doppler that has worked well since 16 weeks, but purchased this to use in second half of pregnancy in order to avoid any possible side effects Dopplers may pose if used too often. Well, my husband and I could barely even hear MY heartbeat. Hearing the baby's heartbeat was impossible, even when my husband tried the bizzare method displayed on the box of putting one's head to the headpiece(?) and trying to listen. Came with no directions to specify what that was even for, aside from picture on box. Went back to using the Doppler because it works every time.

I didn't have huge expectations for this because of the price, but I was hoping for something helpful. I could barely hear my own heartbeat (didn't hear baby's at all), which comes through loud and clear with a cheap stethoscope or BebeSounds monitor. Very disappointed, returned it.
