I have a friend who travels almost 100% for his job. One day we had a conversation the various box fans and other noise makers that my family uses for white noise while sleeping. I told him that I wasn't looking forward to packing all of this stuff up when we go on our vacations as it takes up half of our available space in the van. He said that he uses these "Sleepmate" noise makers while on the road and said they are great as the sound is good and they fit into his suitcase.
I bought one to try out and let each member of our family try it out to see if they liked it before I bought more or returned it. They all really liked it. There were a couple of settings to control the intensity of the sound (high or low). You can also twist the outside to expose "fine tune" it to get it more in alignment with what you want to hear. Looks like it open the slits on the side a bit more to expose the sound more/less.
Anyway, we all liked them a lot and they take up waaaaay less space than the box fans and stuff that we were using in our rooms. They are also very inconspicuous and can be hidden very easily. You don't have to have this monstrous box fan sitting around in your room. So, I'm now getting ready to purchase 3 more so that all of us have one. The price is a bit steep, I think. But, I'll sacrifice a little bit in order to save space in the rooms and when traveling. I'm tired of looking at box fans, hitting them when they rattle, having them fall over, etc.

I have been trying many things to get a good night's sleep. I had thought about a white noise generator; however, there are so many on the market, it was difficult to chose.
When I read reviews about this model, it seemed to be a good choice; and it was! While it is running, it blocks out almost all exterior sound and much of the local. It does take a few days for the brain to adapt. But after that, you barely notice it (at least in my experience). With the constant, steady sound, my brain stops listening for each sound while I'm asleep, thus allowing me to sleep better.
One problem, it is difficult to wake up while it is running. Seriously, it is that good. The sound is so relaxing, I just want to stay asleep.
So I purchased a small mechanical timer to turn it off around the same time as my alarm clock comes on and turn on around bedtime.
I highly recommend this unit. Forget about machines that sound like the ocean, rain, etc. In my case, that kind of sound would keep me awake as my subconscious listens for each sound variation (your results my vary).
A plus with this device is the different volume and tone settings available. The power switch selects low and high air flow rates (one type of volume control) while the main body turns to change the volume within those settings. The top rotates to slightly change the pitch (sharper to softer).

My wife works night shift as a nurse and sleeps during the day. We have neighbors who's dogs bark ALL DAY LONG. Cars rev their engines, emergency vehicle sirens, the UPS man knocking on the door...it doesn't matter; she sleeps through all of that now. Sometimes she asks me to come turn it off about a half hour before she's supposed to wake up just so she can get out of bed.
I'm a light sleeper myself, and any little noise will keep me up. This machine has to be in the top 3 purchases I've ever made. Sad right? Who cares, I'm sleeping well...those freakin' dogs can bark all day if they want!
I guess I'll say a few things about the features of this unit. The air ports are adjustable so that you can change the tone of the sound. Between the two fan speeds and the adjustable ports, you can get a wide range of sound depending on your preferences and how much noise you need to block out.
The cord is also very long, which is always a nice feature. The unit is made very well and seems to be of very good quality. We don't use it nightly, but probably 3-4 times per week. We've been using it for over a year now and everything is still working just fine. This machine always travels with us so we can have good sleep no matter where we are.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Marpac Sound Screen...I know we aren't :)

I bought this exact model. There seem to be a bunch on the market that are very similar and some of 'em made by the same company. Another one had hundreds more customer reviews and this one so far only about 30 something. Don't know the differences... All I know now is this one here does exactly what I want it to and I am seriously thinking of buying another one for another room for complete sound conditioning of my place. But the other room benefits already. It is "loud" but in a good way. Reminds me of being on a plane sorta. It's the sound of rushed air, a nice warm, loud white noise sound that absorbs the intrusive noises all around. I want to create a sound shield to protect me from the noise of machines and rude, stupid sheeple.
I HATE noise. Most of us now live in a light and noise polluted world and this is very bad for us. I believe it is taking a huge toll on our quality of life and on our very health. And if you have ever lived in an apartment, my god, it is simply out of control. You have a right to peace and quite. Unfortunately (most) apartment complexes and even neighbors in your own neighborhood, if your a house owner, do not respect this. Well this little machine is one way to fight back for the peace you deserve as a human being.

I'M ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED TO IT - BETTER THAN MUSIC TO MY EARS WHEN I'M SLEEPING OR TRYING TO LULL INTO ONE. IT HAS A HYPNOTIC WHITE NOISE "WOOSH SOUND" THAT DOES NOT LOOP BUT RUNS CONSTANT WITH NO DEVIATIONS TO DISTURB YOU. I RUN MINE TOTALLY OPEN ON HIGH - THE MAX!! BEFORE THIS I USED EVERYTHING FROM HEPA FILITERS TO LEAVING MY AC IN TILL DECEMBER, (IN NEW ENGLAND)!! (THAT'S NOT COUNTING ALL THE RX'S...) SO ULTRA RELAXING!! WHEN I TAKE OFF IT DEFINITELY COMES WITH ME FOR SURE & IT'S SMALL & EASILY PORTABLE. I WISH THESE WERE AROUND WHEN MY 2ND SON WAS BORN, WHO DROVE ME INSANE CUZ HE NEVER SLEPT & WOKE AT A PIN DROP - YES, IT'S DROWNS OUT BACKGROUND NOISE WHICH IS GREAT & THEY ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR BABIES!! I JUST GOT ONE FOR MY YOUNGEST SON WHO IS HAVING DIFFICULTY SLEEPING & WHEN HE'S HOME FROM SCHOOL HE PLAYS AROUND WITH MINE AS IF TO SAY, "PLEASE MOM, I WANT ONE!!"
