Customer Reviews of MDHearingAid Acoustitone PRO Hearing Aid (Set of 2)Customer Review: Acousititone Pro Hearing Aids Summary: 5 Stars
Acoustitone Pro Hearing Aids
I highly recommend these hearing aids. Why and with what reservations are explained below. An additional note for Australian buyers is that, provided the purchase of these hearing aids is prefaced by a consultation with an audiologist, the cost of the aids, including postage from America, is completely refundable under our Medibank Private Health Insurance.
For several year now I've put up with - or, more accurately, people I've spoken to have had to put up with - my slight hearing loss at the higher frequency end of normal human speech (1K to 4KHz). Typically, if I did not expect someone to speak to me, I would tend to hear a string of vowel sounds; the consonants were supplied by me as a kind of software error correction mechanism which did not always produce sentences that made sense. Consequently, and where the context of the conversation didn't help, I often had to ask for repetition in order to understand what was being said. One audiologist who tested me several years ago said that I'd "have some difficulty hearing consonants spoken by women." Because, he argued, that such consonants were, typically, higher in frequency that consonants spoken by men.
Five years on, and my hearing was marginally worse; I needed hearing aids. I went to two audiologists. The first one charged nothing for the consultation but, having established the profile of my hearing loss, then spent a lot of time trying to sell me one particular brand of hearing aid. Prices started at $4K and went as high as $12.5K. Each. As I soon realised that these prices were designed to pay for other peoples' audiologist consultations which did not result in a hearing aid sale, I arranged to be tested by an audiologist who charged me for her services. The much more relaxed consultation established, as expected, the same profile of mild high frequency hearing loss in both ears. But I was not pressured into buying any particular brand. I was shown a variety of brands I could choose from, with prices ranging from $1K to $4.5K. Each. Whilst these prices were much more realistic, they were still too high for my budget; I just couldn't afford any of these aids at these prices.
As a last resort, I Googled the problem, and came up trumps: Amazon.com were acting as agents for Acoustitone Pro Hearing Aids. These were behind the ear (BTE) models, my preferred type (more robust, harder to lose, larger and much longer-lived batteries). The price was a revelation: $330.00 (US and AUD) per pair! There had to be something wrong! However, my reading of the claimed 103 reviews (I didn't count them all, and there was only one outright negative) convinced me that these were serious and good quality aids. But, before I bought a pair, I felt I needed to clarify in my mind quite what the difference was between these aids and the "official" or "brand name" aids which, even in the BTE models, cost about $2K each. From my understanding of the offerings in the market, I concluded that the difference was fourfold:
1 Expensive aids were typically equipped with at least five channels of amplification,
compared with the Acousititone Pros, which only had two channels: H for high frequencies, and N for low plus high frequencies;
2 Expensive aids were sometimes supplied with remote control devices, so that, in large venues with lots of people talking, such as shopping malls, you could turn the aids off or the volume down, to reduce the "roar" of human sounds;
3 Expensive aids were sometimes supplied with noise reduction circuitry which reduced the surprise effect of sudden, loud noises, and cut down on other sounds;
4 Expensive aids were usually always supplied with custom-made ear moulds, for a guaranteed comfortable fit, and efficient hearing aid performance.
As my hearing loss profile was a gradual slope dropping off of the higher frequencies, a generic, all-high frequency amplification would be fine, and so it proved. A five channel amplifier would be finer, but the difference would be quite marginal and probably undetectable (even with my professionally-trained musician's ears). As for remote controls, that was just another thing to carry in my pocket. I decided that it was quite easy to reach up behind my ears and switch my aids off if I needed to. The lack of noise reduction for sudden loud noise was not an issue: the problem, I thought, would be so rare as to be not worth worrying about.
The last issue, the ear moulds, were my only problem with these hearing aids. The supplied plastic plugs just weren't good enough: mine kept popping out, which both reduced the performance of the aids, and made it easier for the aids to fall off the ear. To be fair, I didn't expect custom-made ear moulds to be supplied over the internet, and even the most expensive aids require that the moulds be made by the audiologist in conjunction with a mould specialist. So, and despite the fact that the Acousititone aids came with five different sized pairs of ear plugs, I threw mine out and went to my audiologist, who was quite happy to arrange for the manufacture of a custom-made pair of ear moulds. I've just had them installed by the audiologist, and they make a world of difference. They stay in, and I now hear perfectly all day.
Consequently, I highly recommend these aids. Their build-quality appears to be very good and they are light and easy to wear; after a while, I just don't notice them. I do think it very important to obtain custom-made ear moulds, though, for best performance of these aids. People who already have such moulds, left over from defunct, defective, lost or broken expensive hearing aids, can simply arrange for an audiologist to connect these Acousititone aids, or do it themselves.
Australians who have top cover with Medibank Private have an allowance for these devices of $800.00 over a period of five years. So, provided you consult an audiologist, the cost of these aids (including air mail postage from America) is completely refundable. Note that, for some bizarre reason, the audiologist's fee is not refundable; you must, however, show that you've consulted an audiologist, if you want a refund on the cost of the hearing aids. I've applied for, and have been told I will also get, a complete refund of the cost of the ear moulds ($60.00 each) and which were installed by the audiologist, both because that's her job and because I needed to show the audiologist consultation in order to obtain the refund on the cost of the moulds. The only other "out-of-pocket" expense has been the cost of batteries: Medibank Private doesn't refund this. But, at nine dollars for eight, size 13 batteries which, so far, last about one month per pair (on by day, off by night), I'm not complaining! I can now hear very well and it's cost me virtually nothing!
