Customer Review: Sahara DryEar and optional travel kit

I first saw the Sahara DryEar advertised in both PADI's SportDiver and DAN's Alert Diver magazines. It has been discussed as a way to avoid problems with otititis externa ("swimmer's ear") especially when diving in a warm, humid environment such as the Caribbean. I thought the item to be a bit pricey. However, after reading an article on outer-ear infections caused/aggrevated by frequent immersion due to swimming, snorkling, or diving, I decided to make the investment. (The article: "Otitis Externa: Can You Prevent It?", Alert Diver, July/August 2006. Note that the article discusses the use of a drying solution rather than a drying appliance; nevertheless I still found it motivating.)
I have been a volunteer diver with the Denver Downtown Aquarium since November 2007, diving between two and four times a month. It is my habit to use the DryEar on my way home (or to work) from a dive session, and I have only charged it once, when I initially purchased it. Since that time it has continued to operate at full effectiveness, so I am quite impressesd with the stamina of a charge.
The DryEar delivers a gentle stream of warm air for a preset amount of time (about 1 minute.) I find a single delivery per ear is sufficient here in Denver. (In the tropics, you'd likely want to use two or three deliveries per ear.) It is a very compact, comfortable device with multiple sanitary earpieces, so two or more people can use the same dryer. It is compact enough to slip easily into your gear bag (right next to the "save-a-dive" parts kit you always carry!) All in all, I recommend this be part of your equipment for a dive trip.
