Our 9 year old had had perhaps a handful of dry nights in his life, so we were ready to try the alarm. First of all, the thing is really tiny, about half a pack of cards, so it really doesn't get in the way too much. The blue unit attaches to their pajama top with a big, well-protected safety pin, and that is attached to the detection part (which is a small clip about 1cm by 2cm), which clips into their underpants (easy for boys with Y-fronts, not sure what people do for girls).
I STRONGLY recommend buying the alarm with the book we bought at the same time - "Waking up Dry" by Howard Bennett. It explains what the real statistics on bedwetting are, the biology of urination, what your child is going through and how to be ready to use the alarm. The time the child spends doing their "homework" (nothing to it really, but will help them stick to the task and make it seem do-able). The book should be compulsory reading for all parents with a bed-wetting child, and its written so that it can be read easily (and understood) by children.
After a couple weeks getting ready, we finally tried the alarm. The combination of the vibration and alarm sound was VERY good at waking him up, and he's a heavy sleeper. The first thing this showed us was that he was typically peeing twice a night and sometimes 3 times!! We wondered how long it was going to take, because from my research bedwetters that age are typically only going once a night. However, within the first week he was already waking himself to go to the bathroom BEFORE the alarm went off. It only took a few nights before when it did go off, he was able to stop the pee so quickly that the sheets did not get wet at all, and he did 90% of the pee in the toilet. Halleluja!!! Its now 2 months later and he's not using the alarm, and we're almost 100% dry... Between the alarm and the book its the best $100 you'll ever spend on your child. Truly amazing.

My ten year old had never had even one dry night in his entire life. When my pediatrician recommeded this, I was amazed at the positive reviews on Amazon.com. I thought it was worth the try. I decided to give it 3 months before we gave up.
I slept on the floor next to his bed and helped him to the bathroom when the alarm went off for the first few weeks. (Turning off the alarm is a 2 step process---first you lift the lever on the clip that attaches to the underwear THEN you press the button). At first he was peeing right through the alarm going off and soaking his pants and pad underneath. He was just so out of it and didn't realize what in the heck was going on. Then it progressed to where his spot on his pants would be smaller before he stopped himself and went to the bathroom. After a while he was able to put the alarm on himself, turn it off himself, and take himself to the bathroom so I could sleep in my own bed and not worry about it at all. And then he would regress and wake up but have no idea how to turn the alarm off because it was like he was sleep walking. But like I said, I was going to give it 3 months!!!! It seemed like the alarm had stopped working for him.
3 months later he is cured. Dry all night with no alarm. Get this thing right now! Your child and their self confidence deserve it.
2 tips: When the alarm goes off, you must first lift the lever and then you can press the button to turn off the alarm. Otherwise the turn off button does not work.
Second, if your child is not responding to the alarm, sleep walking, not remembering what happened the next day, DO NOT GIVE UP! We had a few weeks of regression and times where I thought we might be the family that it wasn't going to work for. But we stuck with it and now he is cured. I would commit to 3 or 4 months. It is SO WORTH IT and the self confidence is priceless.

I was skeptical that a bed wetting alarm would really allow my son to eventually wake himself without the alarm. He is 9 and wouldn't have any sleep-overs because he was too afraid his friends would find out that he had to sleep with night-time undies (pull-up diapers). So he was very motivated to stop bedwetting, but he has always been a heavy sleeper and unfortunately, we eat late, which means he's often getting a full glass of milk right before bedtime.
We had tried medication from our doctor (to help reduce the production of urine overnight) but that didn't help, even at the maximum dosage, so this was what our pediatrician said was left to try.
The Malem product is well designed and fastens very securely with the safety pin. The alarm is easily loud enough to wake my son. My 9-year old could attach and deattach this himself. He also was able to secure the clip (after practicing a few times -- it can be a little difficult to get the underwear material into the small clip) and could easily remove the clip and shut off the alarm himself when it went off at night. He wore his night-time undies over the clip and his normal underwear. This made it really easy when he wet to simply change his underwear and his night-time undies w/o needing to change any bedsheets. (He got up 1-2 times a night the first few nights with the alarm, but then began waking up before alarm went off and using the bathroom himself. One month later (after 14 consecutive dry nights without having the alarm go off), he is completely off the alarm and dry! I'm not sure how it works, but I was amazed at the results and how quickly it was able to condition my son to wake up on his own! I would highly recommend to anyone that was an older son that can manage the alarm themselves -- it was a quick and painless way for us to end the bedwetting!

I normally don't write reviews on products, but I'm so pleasantly surprised with the results that I wanted to take the additional effort to share my experience.
I bought this device for my 6 year old son. He had been staying dry at night for 6 months until he started kindergarten. After then he started wetting the bed 3-4 times a week. Most times he would never wake up and not realize he was wet until I woke him in the morning for school. I tried everything from limiting the amount of fluids at night, making sure he got more sleep, waking him up to use the bathroom, and setting an alarm in his room to wake himself up. Nothing seemed to do the trick and most of these methods train the parent instead of the child. The pediatrician thought it was a phase he would grow out of. After 3 months, I decided to seek out help and read many outstanding reviews on this alarm. My son is a VERY sound sleeper so I was concerned the alarm wouldn't wake him up, but this one also vibrates so I thought that would help. Once we started using the alarm, it only took 1 1/2 weeks for him to consistently be dry at night. I liked the fact that this alarm was loud enough that I would wake up too (our bedrooms are separated by a 12 ft hallway) so I could assist him in shutting off the alarm (which he wasn't able to do) and have some visibility into his patterns. We are on 3 weeks of dry nights and I'm so happy that my son is doing well (and he is too).

My son is 9 1/2 years old and was really down on himself about his bedwetting. The pediatrician kept telling us that he would grow out of it eventually and not to worry, but that's not an acceptable answer when your child asks you "Why can't I stay dry like the other kids". We tried a short-term medication that would allow him to go on sleepovers, but it didn't work for my son. We also did EVERYTHING else that we knew of: Good-Nites, restricting liquids, stickers & rewards, waking him up in the middle of the night - nothing worked. The cost of this alarm seemed like a small fortune at the time and my husband was very skeptical, but after using it, I can say it is the best money I have ever spent. It is much smaller than I expected, but it definitely woke my son and I up. I did sleep with my son during this time. He is usually disoriented when he wakes up and expecting him to unlatch the sensor and turn off the alarm (before it woke everyone else in the house) was expecting too much. The first 2 weeks were rough, with the alarm going off 1-2 times each night, changing clothes and sheets. By the third week, it went off 3-4 nights, but only 1 time per night. By the middle of the 4th week, he was dry (and I moved back into my own room!). It's now been 25 days, and counting, since he has had an accident and we are thrilled. He is also so proud of himself. Get this alarm! It truly does what it claims to do. The book by Bennett was helpful as well.
