Customer Review: The Old Rushing Air Standard Design...

A sleep machine is destined to be one of those things that a lot of people never get to even see, or hear of in their whole lives. Their the blessed ones that can either be curled up in their own cozy beds, or hanging on a nail and drift off without any regard to the sounds around them, or lack of 'em. For the rest of us that will never be that fortunate, a sleep machine is nothing less than one of man's greatest moments of discovery. People that are drawn to sleep machines are pretty much the opposite of those other folks in more ways than just being not so fortunate. I have noticed in life that most folks that seem to never have any problem sleeping are also the ones that can manage it in a dead silent room. They may even be the real extreme types that would rather sweat it out in bed rather than be driven mad by the comfort of an air conditioner. If you are either one of those, a sleep machine is something you can easily pass up in life, and never feel you have dismissed a noteworthy experience.
For the rest of us that suffer through either the restless nights of silence, or just incurable insomnia where we yearn for a decent nights sleep that so much of the rest of the world takes for granted, a sleep machine can come to be something worthy of mentioning in our memoirs. The Marpac really is the flagship of sleep machines. It's not only been around for decades, but with the exception of it now being two speeds and gaining a timer, it pretty much is the same machine in appearance and design as the original introduced many years ago. The Marpac is different than any other sleep machine you will find here, or anywhere else in that it does not produce waves of wind, rain, thunder, or any other type of soothing sound, other than rushing wind, or "white noise" as they refer to it. The Marpac is basically nothing but a small fan like device in a compact enclosure that can be adjusted by turning the top of the unit around, thereby changing the venting of the rushing air through the various vents in its top, and sides. The older models were virtually the same look and design, but had a single speed and could only be turned on a smaller, or more limited scale. Marpacs new unit now has the space age technology of both two speeds, and can be adjusted at will for just about any type of volume desired. Once you have set the speed to your liking, you can turn the units vents and hear dozens of different variations of the rushing air, and thus select which is the most pleasing to you. The white noise design effectively shuts out not only the annoying little noises of your home and neighborhood at night, but it also provides a soothing wind movement wave that will break up a room that is a little too quiet. I have seen these units used in doctors offices of all types to help provide a relaxing atmosphere. The Marpac probably comes close to outselling all other sleeps machines combined.
The Marpacs $50 price tag, (at the time of this writing) may seem a little steep for something that is really nothing more than a fan in a box. But without a doubt Marpac units are more durable and last longer than any other sleep machine I have ever used. They can take a hit, a toss, even a slam and come out of it without a blemish. When one is talking about durable products, or just getting your moneys worth out of something as far as years of service, sleep machines are definitely not the first kind of product that comes to mind. No matter what kind of brand you choose, they are all going to quit on you, (except the Marpac), in what you will consider a too short amount of time. If a simple rushing air design and durability sounds like all you will need to relax you and help you get a restful nights sleep, I highly recommend the Marpac 980a. On the other hand, if you are one that feels you would prefer going to sleep to the sounds of something more exotic and natural, may I recommend the HoMedics 200 unit at the link enclosed. I own the HoMedic presently, and in addition to the Marpac that is still going strong. It is a very simple but effective, durable, and reasonably priced sleep machine. I have left a full review of it as well on its description page. Whether you go for the old time tested unit, or the new kid on the block, I recommend a sleep machine for anyone that is as troubled by the silence of the night, as much as so many others seem to love it...
