It used to be that when I went to my mom and dad's apartment I'd see dad's Parkinson's Disease medicine lying all over the place. He was still relying on his memory to decide whether to take the pills, and the result was he was consistently under/over-medicating himself. Mom tried to keep him on track but he's very independent.
I bought this item over Christmas so we'd have one place to put all his pills, and also so he'd be better at remembering when to take them. You can set the alarm up to four times a day (you choose the times), and set it either as a beep, or as a woman who pleasantly says, "Morning Alarm. 5:30 AM. Time to take your pills." She keeps repeating that until someone shuts her off by pressing a large "Alarm acknowledged" button on top. The container holds a full month's worth of pills and each day you place that day's box in front near the alarm.
Pros: simple to use, color coded for someone who has memory loss (example, the "Alarm acknowledged" button is red for 'stop'), handy way to hold all the pills.
Cons: Hard for elderly people with arthritis or muscle control problems to open the boxes (this issue may go away once the boxes loosen up a little with use), pain in the neck to set the alarm (the electronic voice insists on announcing every minute, so when you want to set it for 5:30 AM, she says, 5:01, 5:02, 5:03, etc., until you reach the time you need. Annoying.)
3/12/11: Here are a couple of updates on Wanda" (the name Dad and Mom gave her).
1. If unacknowledged, the alarm system appears to shut itself off after a few minutes of announcing that it's "time to take your pills".
2. Wanda's voice is just slightly fuzzier than it was in December. I hope that doesn't mean she's going to have a short life!
