Customer Review: My favorite toothbrush ever

Okay, why do I like a toothbrush enough to tell people why I like it? I remember when all toothbrushes were made pretty much like the cheapest toothbrushes you can buy nowadays. The handles were straight, hard plastic rods with a rectangular cross section. The bristles were laid out in a rectangle, with flat brushing surfaces. All the bristles were the same color (clear/white), pointed in the same direction, and were the same length.
Then somewhere along the line toothbrush manufacturers figured out they could make toothbrushes fancier. I don't know if they were really motivated by the desire to make a better toothbrush or just make a toothbrush they could market better. Whatever the reason, a trip to the toothbrush department of your local store presents you with a dizzying array of choices. Handles of different sizes and shapes made from multiple materials with gripping surfaces both simple and elaborate. Bristles point in different directions, are made from different kinds of plastic (even on the same toothbrush) with multiple colors (some of which fade over time to remind you to replace it, as if you can't tell when you need to do that on your own ;-).
I don't know how many of these changes are real improvements and how many are just gimmicks, but this toothbrush strikes me as offering real improvements over a plain toothbrush without resorting to noticeable gimmicks.
- The main part of the handle has a frosted clear look and has just the right amount of stiffness. I can brush as firmly as I want, but the handle starts to give at just the right point to keep me from brushing too hard or make me feel like I'm using a hard plastic stick with bristles on it.
- The front and back of the gripping part of the handle is inlaid with a softer, gel-like material that's colored. This gives the toothbrush a nice look, makes it a little more comfortable to hold, and provides a more slip-resistant surface for better control.
- The handle has a slight bend to it about where your thumb rests on the handle, which puts the bristle end of the toothbrush at a better angle for brushing.
- The handle is not too large. It will, as the previous reviewer says, fit in wall-mounted toothbrush holders, although it rides a bit high (only about 2-2.5 inches fit in my holder). I like the fact that it's not a large handle. A large handle feels like a gimmick to me, and since I replace my toothbrush regularly, a smaller handle means I consume less of the natural resources used to make them and put less in my local landfill.
- The bristles have a sculpted brushing surface, but it seems like a good design, and the bristles are classified as soft, which is what my dentists have always recommended, and which I like.
So basically, it's a very well designed toothbrush that doesn't resort to gimmicks.
If I didn't like this toothbrush so much I wouldn't resort to buying it here. But as the previous reviewer says, Mentadent toothbrushes are hard to find locally, or at least they have been for me. One grocery store chain carried them where I used to live, and since I moved to another state last year I haven't been able to find them anywhere locally. But if you have Amazon Prime or buy a dozen of them (two of this item), the shipping is free and they're priced less here than what I used to pay for them in the store.
BTW, this is not a very good toothbrush for cleaning items other than your teeth. If you're used to using old toothbrushes to clean grout and stuff like that, you'll find that doesn't work well with this toothbrush. The handle has too much give for that and the bristles are a bit soft. But frankly, I'd rather brush my teeth with a toothbrush designed for brushing teeth than one that works well for cleaning grout, and use something else to clean grout. ;-)
