Customer Reviews of Mepiform Self-Adherent Silicone Dressing - 2 x 3" - Box of 5

Customer Review: good deal
Summary: 5 Stars

Ordered and received product as described in 2 days, even with regular delivery. I didn't order the product for myself, so I don't know about it's effectiveness, but I hear it's a good product.

Customer Review: Works but adhesive isn't great
Summary: 3 Stars

I haven't used scar sheeting before buying this so I do not have a basis for comparison. That said, I've read other products and reviews and have a bit of an idea as to how long the adhesive should last on these products.

I had surgery on my face resulting in a long suture along my nasolabial fold approximately 1.5" long. I cut the 2x3" sheets into strips along the short length that would fit in this area. I realize that the instructions say to leave 1cm on either side of the incision, but if I were to do that, I would have sheeting blocking my nostril and also hanging into my mouth.

After cleaning my skin the first night, I carefully applied it, being careful to not touch the gel area. I pressed it onto my skin, went to bed, and was very careful to not sleep on that side. The next morning, after less than 10 hours of wear, the sheeting close to my nose was already no longer sticky/tacky. I think it's due to my skin being naturally a bit oily in that area. The instructions didn't really say how to deal with this or whether there was a way to clean the gel sheeting and reapply. Rather than toss it out after one use, I applied Dermatix brand silicone gel to my wound and then stuck the strip back on. It seems to stick, but it doesn't feel as tacky as it should be.

In all, the first strip lasted about 3 days, not the 7 days that the instructions say you might get (or the 2 weeks that another reviewer cited). These are very thin sheets but the selling point to me were (1) the self adhesiveness (which isn't too good for my use) so that I wouldn't need to use tape, (2) that they're skin colored so they don't stand out too much, (3) that they have a patented technology which keeps the gel from sticking to fragile new cells and pulling them away when you remove the strip, (4) they are able to block out some UV rays so they protect the wound from scarring due to light.

I would try another product before buying this brand a 2nd time as they were pretty expensive. I removed one star for the poor instruction materials that the product comes with and a second due to the lack of adhesive tackiness.

There are only two distributors of this product and I bought it from one of them. When it shipped, my UPS confirmation label said that it was coming from a business in Houston called "Chism", not Direct Medical, the company I thought I'd bought it from. I quickly sent a note to the seller to confirm that they were actually selling it to me as a distributor and my concern about getting a product that had been stored properly. To date, I've never heard back from Direct Medical but since the seller and Chism are both located in Houston, Texas, I assumed it was fine. In all, I would have to say that seller communication was pretty much non-existent. You can get the same price from the other distributor (who is located in PA) and they had great phone support. Just call the manufacturer to get the number.
