Customer Reviews of Merkur "1904" Classic Safety Razor - Open-#41- Made in Germany

Customer Review: Metal is for Tools, Plastic is for Toys
Summary: 5 Stars

Ridiculously FAST SHIPPING!!! Ordered it on 25 June and recieved it to my overeas APO on 02 July. Great Job on the shipping. Outstanding shave with this razor. After reading many articles on "how to shave with a safety razor" I was admittedly a bit apprehensive so...I went at it gingerly the first time. No nicks. The next time I was a good bit more aggressive...no nicks and no razor burn. I'm using the blade that came with my Merkur but have some Wilkinsons and Derby's here now with some Feathers on the way. Just in the testing phase so far with the blades. Along with those items, I have some shaving oil on the way as this is one of the few luxuries I can enjoy while working overseas. Starts the day off a bit more of an "accomplished" fell to it if you will. The handle is a bit short (having read that, I still was a bit suprised but not dissappointed when the razor arrived) but I like the heft and weight. Besides, I think that the longer handle may tempt guys to go after it too agressively the first few times as with the Mach III's, Sensors etc. However, this is pleasantly quite diferent from the toy-like plastic razors or the like. The Merkur is a substantial tool for shaving. Grandpa was right on this one. Obviously, sometimes change is NOT a good thing. Why we as men changed from shaving with safety razors to the stuff now is beyond me. My decision to purchase the Merkur "1904" aka #41" was a good choice for making a change. Sometimes being old-fashoined is good. When I'm wisking up my lather from my shave soap (a VDH set thank you) and shaving with the 1904, I get a few looks from the uninitiated and media duped crowd but...who cares!? Certainly not me...I'm getting a better shave effortlessly AND in the long run will save crazy $$'s on blades as opposed to cartridges. Let's see...$3.50 for ONE cartridge a week or less than a dollar a week (sometimes fifty cents from what I've seen) for a better shave AND less waste. Get out the calculator...lol. Win win all the way around. Especially for me. Hope this helps in your decision.
Addendum: 09 July 2010...have tried the Merkur and Derby blades to date. Wilkinson is next then Feathers. So far, the Derby is less than impressive while oddly enough the Merkur seem to be better. Admittedly, I've started getting more aggressive with the shaving and have nicked myself (my fault I know) but the Derby doesn't seem to do any better than the Merkur so far. I've realized that you can only get so close of a shave no matter how aggressive you are with this or any razor. All you'll do is take more skin. Also, the concept of using shaving oil is a new one but it is DEFINITELY a valuable addition to the process. If you haven't used shaving oil, try it. I had some in the razor pakaging (The Art of Shaving I think) and ran out before my order of Shave Secret came. I'll order a larger quantity just in case I need more. Shaving oil is SO worth the extra step. So far, no complaints except my getting too agressive without shaving oil under my lather.
Addendum Again: July 27 2010...All things being equal, the Feathers are the sharper of the blades that I've tried. They also demand more respect. I would recommend the Derbys, Merkurs or Wilkinsons for a beginning wet shaver or those new to wet shaving with a DE Safety Razor. The Feathers are, as I stated above, noticeable sharper so they demand a higher measure of respect. Whichever blade you choose, read as many articles and watch as many videos as you can manage. Resist the urge to try to take all of the whiskers in one pass against he grain...you will gain knowledge by losing skin and blood no matter which blade you employ. Use this Merkur Safety Razor with any blade of your choice and you can't go wrong. As I stated in the title, this heavy metal implement is a tool that a man uses for shaving. The plastic disposables are toys that should be left for boys. Happy Shaves.
