Customer Reviews of Merkur "Futur" Safety Razor, Satin Finish

Customer Review: Slippery handle
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been shaving with this razor for months now.

When the handle is wet, it's a bit difficult to hang onto. And it *will* get wet in the process of shaving. I wish the handle were knurled or grooved. The problem is not insurmountable, but it is bad enough that I've considered applying a rubber coating to the handle.

Other than that, it is a quality peice of shaving gear which I enjoy using. I'm sure it would last a lifetime. But I'm here to look at different razors today...

Customer Review: Overall a disapointing razor
Summary: 2 Stars

I've been shaving with a DE razor for about a year now. I had been using a Merkur product, a 1904 Classic safety razor, which I loved and which is a truly quality product. However, everyone -- on the internet at least, three bloggers = everyone -- was recommending the futur so I gave it a shot. I'll toot my own horn and say I am pretty handy with the 1904 so I was expecting to be thrilled with the futur. Boy was I wrong, this really does not live up to the Merkur name:

1) Heavy: Even by DE standards this baby has a fat back side. It is really heavy, over four ounces. This would be fine except it is poorly balanced, meaning a light touch -- a DE necessity -- is difficult to comfortably achieve.

2) Huge head: The head of the futur is enormous. I have it here by the computer and it is about the size of one of the buttons on my mouse. Before you buy this consider: "will this fit under my nose?" For me, it was always a struggle not to be that guy with the creepy nostril hair patches.

3)Slick: Only the king muppet of all effing muppets would make a razor our of super smooth, slick metal. Get even a little water on this thing and it feels like its coated in dish soap. Get a grip Merkur, literally.

4)Adjustable settings: All very clever, however, very imprecise, very difficult when the razor is wet (see #3)

5)Cleanliness: It is very difficult to keep this razor clean. The adjustable head has many, many nooks and crannies that get filled with hair and soap scum and are very difficult to clean quickly. My 1904 is spotless after a run under a hot tap, the futur required a thorough cleaning after each use, sometimes with scrubbing involved. The metal it is made of also seems to attract dirt.

6)Terrible Shave: This is fully subjective, and will depend on the user, but I got a terrible shave from this razor. I tried to use it, I really did, for several months, changing my technique and the settings but to no avail. Razor burns were common as well as patches that I couldn't get smooth. In general, it took way longer to shave with this when compared to my 1904, many more strokes to get through even light beard growth.

Ugh.

Back to the 1904 this week and it's been great shaving ever since.

Bottom line: Merkur make great products, this isn't one of them.

Customer Review: Bulky, Slippery, Hard to Adjust & Clean, Agressive Shave
Summary: 2 Stars

In my opinion this razor was designed for marketing appeal and not functionality.

BULKY - shaving under nose is a problem.

SLIPPERY - Need to rinse hands and razor several times during a shave in order to maintain control. All surfaces are polished smooth.

ADJUST Razor Setting - If you don't grasp the head firmly when rotating the adjusting handle, head can rotate easily within your grasp. This resulted in a deep gash on my thumb. Adjusting razor during use is dangerous unless head is wrapped in a wash cloth.

CLEANING - rinsing head under hot water doesn't do it; after a few shaves crud builds up. Definitely not hygienic. Razor must be disassembled and scrubbed clean after each shave. Lots of crevices and 'holes' to collect dead skin and beard.

At all settings the angle of approach is quite aggressive. The use of a blade such as Feather will predispose to nicking at any setting if great care is not taken with the shaving technique.

The head of the razor snaps on and off. Two posts on the head are captured by parallel spring wires. The head is difficult to remove. The position of the head to the razor blade mounting base is not mechanically locked but relies on parallel wire spring tension which will vary over time.

I would give this razor a one star rating but it does meet one objective. It does shave; in my case poorly with regard to irritation and occasional nicks.

Customer Review: WARNING!
Summary: 1 Stars

The honest appraisal of this razor is that, on balance, it is not good. the design is basicaly flawed. Merkur have attempted to convert an exceptional tried and tested design - the heffty classic - to taylor for a younger market. Firstly the method of changing the blade uses a prong system instead of a skrew. The two prongs are held by two flimsy peices of wire - i question the durability there! Secondly the upper head is too bulky and extends too far to the side making shaving of the area next to the ear a chore (also one side extends further than the other???). But crucialy - and this may have been only apparent in my particular razor - the adjustment system is incorrectly fitted. this is due to the tip of the spring exerting more pressure on one side than the other resulting in a head that angles to one side!
Merkur are, however, an exceptional brand, yet, it is a howling mistake they have made here releasing this model.
I would back the heffty classic 101%, but have not an iote of confidence in this one. Additionaly, the cost, even if functioning well, is not justified.
Be smart buy the classic!

Customer Review: MerKur Razor
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered this razor as a Christmas gift for my son. When it arrived, I just wrapped the box. He opened it on Christmas Eve and the razor was broken. Something about pins on the razor head that keep the blade in. I've returned the razor and he has requested that I reorder another one.
