This product is a good way to add fiber to your diet, but like any other food additive, should be added gradually.
I made the mistake of using too much on the first day, and while it didn't upset my stomach too much, I could tell that my body sensed a change.
What's great about this inulin product is that it does mix extremely well into warm foods and Greek yogurt - among other foods. I have been adding a heaping teaspoon to my coffee each morning and that's an easy way to get a dose of fiber in early in the day. I would advise you to heed your body about this product. For me, the changes have been mild, but everyone has their own tolerance for changes in their diet.
I hope to incorporate both inulin and psyllium into my daily meals, since both have their respective health benefits. Unlike psyllium, inulin dissolves and stays the same consistency in your foods, so there's no chance of choking and probably less chance of food allergies. If you want an easy way to add psyllium as well, consider Metamucil fiber wafers. You can eat them as a snack along with coffee, tea or a cold drink. My goal is to see if fiber supplementation assists in weight loss and promotes regularity.
A heaping teaspoon of Fiber-Sure delivers 5 gm of soluble fiber (25 calories and 6 gm carbohydrate) and the product is 100% inulin - no artificial sweeteners or flavors added.
Supposedly inulin enhances calcium absorption and for this reason it is added to yogurt, kefir and other dairy products. It is considered a prebiotic with some studies indicating that it helps to add "good bacteria" to the "gut".
The inulin is produced in Belgium and then packaged in the USA. From what I have read, it appears that Belgium is the primary producer of inulin. Inulin is often derived from chicory root.
As with any food additive, especially one that is fairly new, there is still a lack of information as to what harm if any inulin - that is extracted from a food and not naturally occurring in a food - can cause. Inulin naturally occurs as a food starch in a number of vegetables. It should also be noted that inulin is now added to many popular food products, so you should be mindful of other sources of inulin in your food intake and not overdo self-supplementing with inulin. For example, Arnold Grains & More Double Fiber bread contains 6 gms of fiber per slice and inulin is the next ingredient listed after whole wheat flour, water and sugar. The ingredients list inulin and in parentheses chicory root fiber.
Update 01/21/2011: I have been using inulin and I have found that your body does adjust to it and it is a very easy way to add more fiber to your diet. For those who want multiple benefits and can tolerate psyllium, it may be a good idea to supplement with both inulin and psyllium. Konsyl Balance contains both psyllium and inulin. Psyllium has been shown to lower cholesterol and inulin may help lower cholesterol as well. I am hoping that the inulin will also help with staving off hunger between meals. I take Konsyl Balance (contains inulin and psyllium) before bed each night. The sugar free version does not seem to be available here. I bought it from Walmart's website for $6.99. It contains 57 servings, 3.7 gms of fiber per rounded teaspoon of which 3.4 gms is soluble fiber, of which only 1 gm of soluble fiber is from psyllium. It has a very light, orange flavor, sort of like watery Tang. You do have to mix it thoroughly and rinse your glass as soon as you're done drinking the mixture. On the side of the package, it states "in addition to maintaining regularity, fiber can also help lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar levels, control weight by helping you feel full and curb cravings, and maintain healthy intestinal flora."
