Customer Reviews of NasoGel Water Soluble Saline Nasal Gel Spray for Dry Noses by NeilMed - 1.52 fl. oz.

Customer Review: Best saline spray out there!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used my share of nasal saline sprays out there, and I must say that this stuff is the best! I'm a vocalist who struggles with allergies, a killer for my hobby. Things like a neti pot and a humidifier do wonders to help me, but when traveling or during the winter when heaters constantly keep me dried out, I need a little extra boost.

It's especially been a life saver this winter when I discovered my humidifier causes more sniffles than it cures thanks to the bacteria in the water, and I'm short on funds to buy an effective warm mist humidifier. I'd still take a warm mist humidifier over this product any day, but I'd still find some use of this spray during winter.

First of all, I wouldn't use this product, or any saline spray out there, for the cure of any chronic sinus issues be it dry sinuses or allergies. I would use daily nasal irrigation for that, which NeilMed makes a couple of wonderful products for. Also, investing in a good warm mist humidifier should help with this. My cool mist humidifier that was making me sick more often than not did at least help me with sinus problems, but of course created a multitude of other issues. However, that's neither here or now.

This spray is not 100% drip free, but that doesn't matter much to me. I'd actually be very concerned if it was too viscous to travel easily through my sinuses as it's more of a stream than a spray, but so is any other nasal spray I've used. It's loose enough to get around in my sinus passages, but has enough gel to keep a good amount of the saline in. Typically when using this product, I'll give two sprays in each nostril (as with any nasal spray, I tilt my head forward and angle it as if I'm trying to hit the eye opposite of the nostril I'm spraying into) and try to hold it in for 30 seconds to a minute. It will run out some, but that's OK. After that, I blow my nose, which I'm always amazed at how much it ends up clearing out in comparison to other saline sprays at this point. While this does expel a lot of it out, I can clearly tell just how much of a difference it makes with how moisturized my nose stays for hours after use. Other saline sprays that I've used, I've only gotten 30 minutes of sinus relief at best. Comparatively, I've gotten up to about 5 hours at best and 2 hours at worst with this product. It may not be perfect, but that's why I say it's best to use it in addition to other treatments.

I find I get the best results from this product whenever I use it just before taking a shower. The combination of steam produced from the shower and the gel of the saline will do almost as good of a job as a good nasal rinse with a neti pot. It's never nearly as perfect, but it will give me something manageable for the purposes of singing. This I find especially important for times I'm traveling and unable to get a good way of producing warm, clean water required for nasal irrigation. Also, when I have a humidifier, I don't haul that around with me as I travel.

There is one major drawback to this product, however. The spray bottle itself seems to do the worst job at being able to spray the product successfully every time. I don't know if it's because of the nature of a gelatious liquid or just poor design in the spraying mechanism. Either way, I can always get it to work with minimal fussing around, so it doesn't warrant reducing a star. The worst is the first time using it. I recommend trying to get at least three good sprays out of it before using it after first opening the package, especially if you're not used to using this product yet (trying to get 1-2 good sprays is something you should do with any spray bottle upon first use). This thing still seems to misfire, though. Until you get used to how successful sprays feel in your nose on varying days of congestion and dryness, you may want to visually confirm a successful spray out of it before using it each time you use it. This does waste product, but you should have a good feel for it before you even go through half the bottle. I ended up wasting a lot of product on a particularly dry and congested day thinking it wasn't working.

UPDATE 2/17/2011
I've been going through my second bottle and haven't been having the "misfire" problem that I spoke of previously. Either my first bottle was damaged, or I was wasting product from just not being used to how it feels. It does have a very different feel from other nasal sprays I've used in the past.
