IN A NUTSHELL: VERY SAFE BUT THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS COME ONLY FROM STANDARDIZED DOSES like the one being offered here to you by Nature's Way.
The current scientific literature shows that Milk Thistle, standardized to 80% "Silymarin", in doses of about 600 mg. per day offer therapeutic benefits in the maintenance of a healthy liver.
Specifically, clinical research has shown that; Alcohol-related liver disease, Hepatitis, Liver cirrhosis and Gallstones are conditions that standardized Milk Thistle has been shown to improve over a period of at least 8-12 weeks of continued use.
CAUTION:
Bear in mind that some of the above conditions are potentially fatal, and all are serious. Therefore, the care of a qualified physician is necessary, and the use of any product should NOT be considered to be an adequate self-treatment as a cure or preventative.
HAVING SAID THAT:
Standardized Milk Thistle, such as the product being offered here, is very beneficial to people who take presciptions drugs, are exposed to environmental toxins or that have concerns about the health of their Liver. Yes, of course I think "Nature's Way" is tops and "Now" is excellent, but "Swanson Superior Herbs", because of its much lower price, is the one on my shelf at this moment. Honestly, for me, this is a matter of cost, and the Swanson product costs less than half as much as the unbeatable "Nature's Way" product. Occasionally, Swanson runs buy 1 & get 1 free promos for this specific product. That is when I get mine, generally I buy 3 and get 3 free.
ABOUT NATURE'S WAY:
By the way, one of the reasons I believe in "Nature's Way" is due to its being licensed as a pharamaceutical manufacturing facility in the United States. The other reason is that I have used Nature's Way, whenever I could afford it or when there were no acceptable replacements, for the past 5 years. Right now I have 11 different "Nature's Way" products on my shelf, and I have no incentive to buy them other than those they merit.
WHY & HOW TO TAKE MILK THISTLE:
I take 3-4 capsules per day, on an empty stomach. I take Milk thistle because I take a large number of prescription medicines, and have for over twenty years. Naturally, I wish to help keep my Liver healthy, and this is one way I believe that I can. I do my own research and my only motivation is the continued health of my family and myself.

Milk thistle is a great herb! Especially helpful for those suffering from any form of liver disease. In fact, milk thistle is called the "liver herb" by many well known herbalists. No other reviews mention this, but this product is only 1/2 milk thistle (what you would expect) and 1/2 blessed thistle (not mentioned for some reason) per the ingredient label. Blessed thistle is noted for other positive benefits, but none are particularly liver-related, and it is not the same thing as milk thistle. I was somewhat confused why it is included in this product. Nature's way is a good company, but note that you are only getting about 1/2 the milk thistle you are probably expecting when you order this product...Customer Review: Blessed thistle? Why?

After a week or so of taking this product I started to experience some odd side effects. Did some research and found that blessed thistle's main therapeutic benefit is to stimulate milk production in new mothers.
Why this is included with an herb that is intended for liver support is well beyond me. Maybe someone at Nature's Way thinks "milk" thistle and an herb that helps new mothers produce milk for their babies belong together. Wrong!
What this points out is it's very important to look at labels for herbal products. Some herbs do synergize with others, but it could be dangerous to rely on a nutriceutical company's assessment without checking for yourself.
I'll be throwing the rest of my bottle away and thinking very hard about buying any of Nature's Way products in future.
