I've tried a few different brands of packeted powdered stevia and a couple of liquids. I found this brand to work best for me. One kind I tried didn't dissolve well, especially when it hit an ice cube in a glass. One liquid I tried had a funky aftertaste, better than with artificial sweetener though, and may be because it also contains vanilla. I tried a liquid with lemon which tastes good, but needs to be refrigerated after opening. This version dissolves quickly regardless of temperature and is more convenient than carrying around a bottle of liquid, and tastes better to me than the Splenda I used for a long time. I also found I had to use up to 2 packages of others for the same sweetness of a half package of this. I guess keeping that open 1/2 packet around is a pain, but it's a pain I'll bear gladly :)
As for the horrors of maltodextrin. Maltodextrin and table sugar (sucrose) are not broken down in the same way in the digestive tract. Beyond that, any powdered alternative sweetener (artificial or not) that is bulked up with fillers will have some carbohydrate. Sweet'n'Low contains dextrose (=glucose=blood sugar), Splenda contains maltodextrin and/or dextrose depending on which form you use, Equal Spoonful uses maltodextrin. My diabetic father (insulin dependent) has had no problems with using Equal spoonful, though I wish he'd switch to stevia for reasons other than carb content.
If you have a problem with the tiny amount of carbohydrate in this type of product for any reason, you should be reading all ingredients BEFORE you buy, not relying on reviewers to tell you. The description clearly says there is maltodextrin in this product.
It does not claim to be pure stevia. The maltodextrin helps keep it from caking, and the other ingredients (natural flavors) are supposed to help with bitter aftertaste, and it seems to work. You can buy pure stevia, but friends that have tried it didn't like the taste, so I haven't bothered.
BUT all things in moderation. Don't be downing handfuls per meal of any sweetener. Try some fruit :)
