When I received this unit I was very pleasantly surprised, especially with the ease of use and the many functions it offers. I had a wrist blood pressure monitor once that proved to be unreliable and I much prefer this cuff model. As soon as I got it out of the box I started to play around with it. I was looking for a couple of things. I wanted to know how reliable the readings would be within the space of a few minutes without any major disruption in my environment and if there were any things I would have to suggest to other users to ensure they use the monitor properly. When using the monitor correctly, my readings were fairly consistent. The user who is new to this monitor definitely should read the directions thoroughly.
If you just jump in and start using it and don't pay attention to certain "rules," you will think your pressure is way out of whack or the machine is malfunctioning. Take for example if you eat, have an alcoholic beverage, or are particularly active before a reading, chances are your reading will be off. If you think the machine will automatically average your readings and you press the memory button, you won't have anything there. This function has to be set up (very easy). If you just are using it occasionally you may not want to use this option. Simply read the manual and I doubt you'll have many questions. The manual is one of the best "user friendly" manuals I've seen in some time.
PROS:
+ The digital display is large, clear and very easy to see. A real plus for the visually impaired user.
+ Two users can use this machine and obtain individualized readings. There is a simple "User ID" selection switch on the monitor.
+ The display will indicate if an irregular heartbeat is detected. If you have Atrial Fibrillation you may or may not be concerned, but if are seeing this for the first time, you will need to contact your physician.
+ There is a "movement error symbol" that will be displayed if you disrupt the reading by moving. You simply need to wait a few minutes and try again.
+ There is a "morning hypertension symbol" that will be displayed if your morning average readings either for the systolic or diastolic values are high for the week. Make sure you set up your machine so the memory function will work.
+ Other useful display symbols include the heartbeat, the average value, the morning average, the evening average, and the cuff wrap guide symbol (indicates if your cuff is on correctly). Each and every part of this Omron can be looked at and individualized for each user.
+ The monitor can be used with the included AC adapter or batteries (4 "AA"). If your batteries are low an indicator will flash to let you know you need to change them.
+ The date and time are indicated on the top of the digital display. This is handy for those who prefer to record all their information in a notebook rather than use the memory function. The directions for setting them are quite clear and easy.
+ There is a TruRead function that will "inflate, take a measurement, and deflate three time separated by a short interval of time between each measurement." Once again, the direction for setting up this function are clear and easy.
+ The directions for applying the arm cuff are not only in the instruction manual, they are visually seen on the cuff itself. This cuff can be adjusted to use on both the right and left arms.
+ The machine has a calibration light that is on during a measurement. If it is not working properly, an error symbol will flash.
+ If you need to inflate to a higher pressure you can inflate it 30 to 40 mmHg "higher than your expected systolic pressure." This feature will reset itself when you are done taking your measurement.
+ For those who care to use Microsoft HealthVault you can install the software and have it available to your healthcare provider online.
I haven't been able to find anything I don't like about this blood pressure monitor and probably won't. The directions are perfect and with a thorough reading they answered any questions I had. It also had a few troubleshooting tips for when the error light comes on. There is a lightweight case that comes with the monitor to store it in between uses. I'd suggest keeping the instruction manual in there as well (it is in English and Spanish). This monitor is infinitely better than the wrist monitor I had and is perfect for keeping a record of blood pressure readings. As it states, it is not a diagnostic tool, but is perfect for helping you keep a handle on your own healthcare issues. I'd highly recommend this model to anyone who is looking for a monitor that is easy to use and is of high quality.

What the Numbers Mean
