Customer Reviews of Omron HBF-510W Full Body Composition Monitor with Scale

Customer Review: Blatantly Unreliable
Summary: 1 Stars

This page says the measurements are very accurate. You read the instructions that come with the item and they have clear disclaimers saying that the measurements CANNOT [my caps} be relied upon to be accurate. The instructions even have numeric charts showing how your numbers relate to high, normal, low in that category. If the numbers cannot be relied upon, why do they publish charts with the product? Who can trust the numbers at all because of this? The only thing you may get out of this is relative changes in the numbers from this device over time, assuming the machine is consist in its variation, definitely not how absolutely accurate they are, or against another brand's equivalent measure.

Customer Review: Way off!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this a while ago, and suspected it was off as I'm pretty thin, active, and it was giving me measurements in the 28% to 29% range. But as of today, I had an underwater body composition test at a professional lab, and it turns out the scale was off by about 10%, making it completely useless. I followed the instructions for the scale carefully, tried taking the test at various time of the day, and while the results didn't vary by more than 2-3%, they're just consistently terrible. Definitely on my "do not buy" list. (The weight measurement seems to be off by a bit more than 1/2 pounds, if I'm to trust the measurements at the lab. But if it is, that's not too bad for a home scale.)

Customer Review: Low Quality - Broken Upon Second Use!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought a Model 512 from the same line from [...] in Sep. 09 to be an upgrade from my Tanika fat monitor. I was excited about the functionality.

Unit did not work on carpet (Tanika did), so after first use I put it in a guest bathroom. Five months later I changed out fresh batteries and it just died - no weight can be registered.

Called Omron and they wants $8 handling to process the warranty. With shipping it will cost me say $20 to service it, and it only cost me like $40 on woot.

Extremely poor quality - stay away.

Customer Review: Repair Problems
Summary: 1 Stars

Well, I've got the precursor to this model, the HBF-500. I bought it in 2008. It has begun to malfunction in a minor way -- some of the numbers only appear intermittently. It is out of warranty, but I thought I would pay for a repair. It turns out that Omron refuses to repair their scales that are out of warranty. The customer service rep that I spoke to indicated that this policy applies to all of their scales.

So, after the warranty period, if this scale breaks, you can just throw it out. I am completely disgusted.

Customer Review: worked 19 months then died: buy a new one says Omron
Summary: 1 Stars

My HBF-500 lasted only 19 months before it died. Used only for occasional weighing. Omron's advice: buy a new one. It gave no suggestions on repair, no replacement, not even a partial credit. It shrugged: one year warranty. In the European Union, by law it must give a two year warranty. My experience matches Free Thinker SC, as do my expectations. I won't waste more money on Omron products.
