Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-780 Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with ComFit CuffCustomer Review: Good Purchase; Revealed a problem Summary: 5 Stars
I read a lot of reviews on a variety of sites and chose this brand because it seemed to be the most preferred I chose this model because both my husband can store our records separately. Good idea; it revealed an unsuspected problem with my husband's heart!
I took it in to test alongside my doctor's equipment and it passed the test. I also have an Omron wrist (it was also tested) which I thought 'd prefer since it was easier to put on, but it's not as sensitive as the larger arm cuff model, which isn't really much harder to put on.
I reviewed this cuff, as above, after buying it to monitor problems I was having. These are additonal remarks:
My husband tried it "for fun". He's a jogger, non-smoker, etc., and very confident that his heart was in fine condition. This cuff constantly showed that he had an irregular heartbeat. After his physical, which went well, he mentioned this to his doctor. His doctor, who had never detected a problem, said it was worth checking into. It was; my husband has a problem that has not become serious yet, but is being monitored by a cardiologist. Although his heart is reasonably healthy, irregular heartbeats can result in bloodclots due to the interruption in bloodflow which can cause strokes, and he now knows what to watch for.
I had been with him following knee surgeries, and his heartbeat was steady...that was about 5 years ago. After this cuff indicated a problem and he was tested, I was there when the cardiologist ran tests recently, and it was scary to listen to the monitor and realize how unsteady the beat had become (especially when there was no beat for long periods). We - and his doctor - would never have suspected he might have a problem if we had not had this cuff. It gave us a "heads-up" warning.
Customer Review: Best BP Monitor So Far Summary: 5 Stars
I could tell, right out of the box, that this was a quality built unit. The manual was very clear, concise and easy to understand. I have owned several automatic BP monitors over the years. The previous BP monitors were a crap shoot when it came to getting an accurate reading. My wife would usually just give up and go back to the manual model with stethoscope as that was always reliable and accurate... But a real pain in the rear to use.
This one is by far the best of them all. It is very easy to use with consistently accurate readings, whether taken on the left or right arm. This unit also has the unique ability to detect irregular heartbeat which could be a lifesaving feature for some folks. This unit is a bit larger and heavier than the other models that I have used, but it also feels rugged and built to last. Simply put, I like everything about the Omron HEM-780.
I read one review where it was stated that the Omron HEM-780 would not inflate past 148 mmHg. The reviewer probably made this statement due to not reading the manual (This unit does not inflate more than required). Actually, the cuff will automatically inflate up to 220 mmHg (but only if needed.) The manual says that if the user's systolic pressure is expected to be more than 220 mmHg, to simply press and hold the START/STOP button until the monitor inflates 30-40 mmHg higher than your expected systolic pressure. The manual cautions, however, that inflating the cuff more than necessary may result in bruising where the cuff is applied. Also, I would advise that anyone actually having a systolic pressure of over 220 mmHg to see a cardiologist, immediately. I hope this review is helpful as this is an important subject.
Customer Review: Reliable, accurate and with improved features over earlier models Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second Omron blood pressure monitor. I purchased this one as a replacement for my first one (which had been purchased at least 4 or 5 years ago) not because it failed to work, but because I had a friend who needed a monitor and I wanted the upgraded features of the HEM-780. I find Omron monitors to be easy to use, and they produce very similar results to the manual cuffs used in my doctors' offices. They also work reliably for a long time with regular use on battery power alone.
One added advantage of this model is that it fits well for people who, like me, may be too large for standard cuffs. My arm size falls just between the two cuff sizes the doctor has, making one almost too small and the other almost too large, and giving me less confidence in their readings. Sometimes they pull out both cuffs and compare. I feel more comfortable using a cuff that is sized correctly, and the range of this cuff is such that it fits me perfectly.
I like the features this model has that my old one didn't, such as detection of irregular heart rhythms and classifying of readings by morning and day/night so that morning hypertension can be identified more readily.
The one drawback of this model is that earlier models allowed for the cuff to nest in the top of the same hard plastic case that contained the screen, so while it was bulkier, it was easier to keep in one piece and required less fussing with the zippers and floppy sides of the new fabric case. I preferred the older physical design, but the new features on this model more than make up for any design-related inconvenience.
Customer Review: Absolutely PERFECT for pregnancy monitoring Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for 2 specific reasons (and in order); 1) my wife is pregnant and her blood pressure was elevated during successive visits, and 2) I range from normal to just below hypertensive. I felt it was the perfect opportunity to purchase a blood pressure monitor to handle both issues, and to provide a monitor for both of us once our child is born. After doing some quick research, I chose this model.
This model is outstanding in its simplicity and accuracy. I was very concerned when we began using this, as my wife's blood pressure was reading out as perfectly normal. We went to the doctor two days after receiving this monitor, and low and behold, it was accurate. I mean, accurate within 3 units on both numbers. I attribute the difference to either the visit or human error/timing. Either way, this machine is great!
It is simple for anyone to use, it keeps up with irregular heartbeats, blood pressure, heart rate, weekly changes, etc...
One of the other great features is the cuff. I was into bodybuilding for almost a decade, so my arms are a bit larger than the average person, so finding cuffs for me is a little more difficult than most. My wife, a very petite woman, has a small arm and has the same issues, just on the opposite end of the spectrum. Both of us are able to use the device without any issues. I recommend this for anyone who is looking for a good, accurate monitor.
Pros: Accuracy, ease of use, cuff adjustment sizes, cost
Cons: None that I am aware of yet.
Customer Review: More than enough! Summary: 5 Stars
I like the machine and would buy again. It is much faster on inflate and deflate. The machine I had before you could actually count the pulse and you would second guess your BP thus leading to "self-fulfilling prophecies". This one is fast so by the time you think about it it is done. It seems to be slightly more accurate than the old one and measurers the same each time.
Unit has so many features that I do not use most of them but will probably start utilizing some of the capabilities as we start our travel season. Right now I have a spreadsheet that calculates a running average but the machine does that too. It also has a evening average and a morning average plus some other features like a clock and two person mode. My dead unit did not have an AC adapter but this one does so if the batteries go dead you can always plug it in. There is a three reading mode that I find usless - it takes you BP three times in a row and I guess that is supposed to give a better short term reading.
I was familiar with my old cuff and the new unit has a much different feel and is much different on how it is put on the arm. It took a few days getting used to it but now I like it better that the previous method. The Amazon price was as cheap as I could find when you figure the free shipping but of course Amazon knows this and prices accordingly.
