Customer Review: worthwhile purchase that prevented being medicated
Summary: 5 Stars

True story. Out of the blue was found to have high blood pressure readings (~150/90) by my primary care physician, so was sent to the cardiologist, where similar readings were detected. With no further testing, cardiologist wanted to put me on blood pressure medication, claiming that the medication was no big deal but I'd be on it for life. I resisted and he suggested I buy an Omron monitor and monitor my blood pressure at home for a month. Surprise surprise, my blood pressure with the Omron was consistently around 110/65. Went back to the cardiologist and the higher reading came back. Thankfully the nurse recognized that my pressure in the doctor's office was being taken with a small blood pressure cuff, and when she used a large cuff my pressure was 110/65. Go figure - I go from thinking I have hypertension and nearly being put on a blood pressure medication for life to having perfectly normal blood pressure, simply because an improper size cuff was being used. Thankfully the Omron gave me piece of mind and reassured me that the problem was not with me, it was with the highly trained professionals who apparently love to prescribe medication at the drop of a hat. Turns out I didn't need to purchase the Omron, but I am very glad I did.

Customer Review: Happy first-time user of blood-pressure monitor
Summary: 5 Stars

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, but the doctor thought that I was really suffering from 'white coat syndrom', in which points are added to your pressure just being around a doctor. Then I went on Amazon, and found that it had a solid 5-star rating from over 60 customers and decided to buy it. The Amazon price, by the way, was excellent, at least compared with local pharmacy prices.

Bottom line is that it is easy to use, has a memory, keeps an average of the last three readings, and that was all I expected or wanted. (My blood pressure, thankfully, seems lower too.)

I did my review not looking at any other reviews or talking to anybody so I would not be influenced in any way. By the way, I'm amazed at the length of some of the reviews and will be sure to read them later after I write my review.

I do plan to take it with me to the doctor's office next time to make sure it agrees with his machine. I think that is a wise thing to do, though I have no reason to think there will be any variation.

(Follow-up on July 10, 2006: I did take my monitor to the doctor's office, and I'm glad to report that he confirmed that it was accurate compared to his monitor.)

Customer Review: Measure your own bood pressure with this convenient monitor
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many people, having my blood pressure measured in a doctor's office usually results in an artificially high reading. After my most recent visit to my family physician he recommended that I buy a blood pressure monitor and measure my blood pressure at home every day. At first I bought a monitor which measures blood pressure at the wrist, but I had difficulty getting consistent readings with it. A friend who is a retired physician recommended that I get an upper-arm-positioned monitor and specifically recommended Omron, so I bought the HEM 780 AC monitor. I'm very pleased that I did. The readings with this monitor are much more consistent than those obtained with the wrist monitor and, as I suspected would be the case, are significantly lower than values obtained in my doctor's office. The monitor is very easy to use and functions completely automatically once you turn it on and press the start button. After each measurement it digitally displays both the systolic (higher) value, diastolic (lower) value, and the pulse plus the date and time. Furthermore it saves these values sequentially for the 90 most recent measurements -- a real convenience for comparing values over time. I highly recommend this product.
