Customer Reviews of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Natural Whey, Vanilla, 5 PoundCustomer Review: Great Summary: 5 Stars
One of the best protein drinks I've ever had. Doesn't mix the greatest, but overall a wonderful product
Customer Review: ON 100% Natural Whey all the way! Summary: 4 Stars
Sorry for the awful title.
Got into fitness earlier in the year. Both my wife (mid-20s) and I (in my late 20s) were unhappy with our bodies. Too little exercise, too much good (bad) food. Our goal was (and is) to increase lean muscle to help burn more fat. My additional goal is to get some sweet guns (almost there, pew pew).
I think we're onto our 6th or 7th 5lb tub now. We use ON 100% Whey Gold Standard Natural (Vanilla) now but originally used the 100% Whey Gold Standard (Vanilla Ice Cream and sometimes Double Chocolate).
We stopped using the Vanilla Ice Cream (and others from the non-Natural range) mainly due to the sweeteners and flavourings used. Yes, they do taste a little bit better but not by enough to assuage our misgivings about the ingredients.
If you're even a little bit paranoid about artificial sweeteners and flavourings, Optimum Nutrition's Natural range is great. We've even started using pure Stevia (the same natural sweetener used in this powder) for our tea and coffee.
We've yet to try the Chocolate or Strawberry flavours but find the Vanilla to be pleasant tasting (although not fantastic) with milk or juice, and tolerable when mixed with water.
Regarding mixing, I gently tap in small amounts and stir briskly with chopstick, which usually mixes quite well and leaves few lumps. My wife is impatient and dumps it all in, making it impossible to mix smoothly and resulting in a super-lumpy drink. Haven't tried a shaker yet but when blended into smoothies it's completely lump free.
Our main reason for sticking with Vanilla is its versatility; we use this whey protein in OJ, smoothies, with our oatmeal, occasionally even sprinkled on cereal (yes, a bit weird that one).
A significant factor in sticking with this particular product is price. We're only paying around $33 per 5 pound tub using Subscribe & Save. Free shipping.
That's pretty astonishing when you consider that ON's whey provides more protein per serving than other, more expensive, brands.
Results? Well, I gained some muscle and definition, and I definitely lost some fat. I don't think I could eat enough meat or drink enough milk to get the amount of protein required to build and, crucially, maintain muscle. For me, this is an essential supplement.
Customer Review: Good Product Summary: 4 Stars
In the 2004 version of his book, On Food and Cooking, food scientist Harold McGee states that "[after many studies], toxicologists have concluded that MSG is a harmless ingredient for most people, even in large amounts."
The artificial sweetener aspartame has been the subject of controversy since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. Concerns have been raised about the quality of the research supporting its safety and the long-term effects that increased consumption could have on the public.[21][22][23] Some scientific studies, combined with allegations of conflicts of interest in the sweetener's FDA approval process, have been the focus of vocal activism, conspiracy theories and hoaxes regarding postulated risks of aspartame.[24][25]
A 2007 safety evaluation found that the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener.[26] Some sources of claims regarding postulated aspartame dangers and conspiracies have been the subject of critical examination.[27] In 1987, the U.S. Government Accountability Office concluded that the food additive approval process had been followed for aspartame.[21][28] Based on government research reviews and recommendations from advisory bodies such as the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide.[29][30] In 1999, FDA officials described the safety of aspartame as "clear cut" and stated that the product is "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved."[31]
Great product but if worried about this which shouldn't be.

Customer Review: Subtle (but good) taste and mixes very well Summary: 4 Stars
If you want whey that tastes like a delicious dessert drink, look elsewhere. But if you want a protein with a subtle taste and/or containing real sugar (fructose) instead of sweeteners, this one is excellent. This protein also mixes more easily than AllTheWhey or Dymatize--ON whey can even be mixed in a cup with a spoon (but a mixer cup is still easier). As far as taste when mixed with milk, I thought it was less interesting than AllTheWhey and Dymatize Gourmet, but that is more than made up for by the fact that subtle vanilla can be mixed with many other flavors.
I frequently use a scoop of this in smoothies, and it has very little effect on the taste. (I also tried using it in pancakes, but it affects the texture.) The vanilla is somewhat subtle, but like all whey proteins, it tastes pretty icky when mixed with water alone. I bought this protein so that I could use it with multiple liquids/flavors, but from now on I am planning to use unflavored whey protein for this purpose, which is much more versatile--ON Natural Vanilla Whey would probably taste strange (or too sweet) when mixed with orange juice, for example.
Customer Review: Good, but not great. Summary: 4 Stars
I have been using Jay Robb 100%whey which I love, but it is very pricey. I can not use artifical sweeteners due to chemical sensitivity. Aspartame, even in small amounts, effects my cognative skills (I can't even count to ten)and causes SEVERE migraines. Splenda in small amounts is ok, but I would not want to take it daily basis. Stevia is a healthier option, but it does leave a slightly bitter taste in your mouth. This product mixed ok in milk, although it's consistancy is thinner than Jay Robb's. When mixed with 1/2 cup yogurt and 1/2 cup milk, the consistancy was much better. I am giving this four stars because of the price (12oz of Jay Robb is about $24.00). I don't hate the taste-it's just ok. If I wasn't using it every day for breakfast,I would probably opt to buy the Jay Robb.
