Customer Reviews of Panasonic ER421KC Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer, Wet/Dry, Lighted

Customer Review: Surprise! It actually works very well.
Summary: 5 Stars

God has a cruel sense of humor. Why else would he design so many males so that their hairs would fall out of their heads and sprout out of their ears, nose, and back?

Panasonic has done the mankind a favor by inventing this much needed gizmo, though no man with any pride would admit to buying or even needing this device. It's doubtful that Americans would have ever invented this device. It took the Japanese - who in their country have hair salons where women can go get their pubic hairs (yes you read that right) trimmed, styled, and colored - to do so.

The device in the photo looks kinda scary - who'd enjoy shoving a mechanical device with a buzzing blade into his nose? I finally took the plunge and bought this thing, because the errant nose hairs constantly tickled inside of my nose. The days of shoving a pair of scissors inside of my nose is finally over.

The device is very well designed, it turns out. The tip is small and very smooth to touch, and you can actually press the tip to inside of your nose without any discomfort. The noise and vibration is minimal, and the small spinning disc (enclosed inside the metal cage) cuts very well, with no discomfort. The device itself is small and comfortable to hold.

After you're done "shaving", look at the sink below and be prepared to be surprised how much hair were shorn. You can also use device to precisely cut an errant hair sticking out of your sideburn as well. Great device, if you can ever get over the ticklish concept that you actually need a nose hair trimmer.

Customer Review: It started out great, but went downhill quick...

I'm not going to go into a long detailed explanation, but I will say this:
I've tried about a dozen different makes and models of nose hair trimmers and they were all junk/garbage. The Panasonic ER421KC is a fantastic piece of grooming equipment that works perfectly and quickly. It's powerful, well built, and cuts clean and quickly just like it should. I'm the kind of guy who will spend a ton of money to find the right product so that when I need to use it, it will do what it is supposed to. Trust me when I say this is the one to get, so go for it! Besides that, for $16, it's a bargain in my opinion. Enjoy!

5/24/2010 REVIEW UPDATE:
Shortly after I posted my original review, I started having trouble with this trimmer. It started to have a really hard time picking up speed when spinning the blade and keeping up speed. I have always cleaned it meticulously after every use and even tried different kinds of lubrication and batteries but it just works very poorly. I still have it and put up with it but it's very frustrating because it ends up pulling a lot of hairs because the RPM's intermittently drop which causes the blade to yank the hair instead of cutting it. It's just weak and no matter how many new batteries I put in it, it still is gutless and ineffective for the most part. I was very disappointed since as usual, I purchased the item here on Amazon after reading several positive reviews on the product. I guess you can't win them all!

Customer Review: Broken? This may fix it
Summary: 5 Stars

I have an older Panasonic 411 model trimmer (basically very similar, but no light) and have always had problems with the motor speed -- usually it was too slow and weak, and it seemed to vary for no discernible reason. A couple days ago, it quit completely. Well, after fiddling with every part of it I could access (pulling off the on-off switch, trying to pull the inner unit out etc), I discovered that this thing is very sensitive electrically (probably due to the fact that it operates on only 1.5 volts) to the bottom (in the cap) battery center contact. I pulled out the metal contact (it's held in simply by the two "points" pressing against the plastic), scraped and sanded the contact a bit, but more importantly, I pulled the center portion out quite a bit to bend it enough to press pretty firmly against the battery negative end when reassembled. Voila, more RPM than I ever remember getting! I have a feeling this may be the reason many have had their trimmers quit working. Give this fix a try!

Customer Review: So far, so good
Summary: 5 Stars

So I've heard horror stories of these things having next to no lifespan, so if my goes kaput in the next few months I'll update this review. That said, this thing is working exactly as advertised.

The light is indeed useful, and you can get a good look up your nostril. The actual trimming process feels a bit weird if you've never done it but is light-years ahead of the tweezers - that is, there is no pain to speak of. Note that the trimmer does not cut the hair completely: it just pares it down to the proper length, which is more than sufficient to keep hairs from poking out.

So, as it stands, if you're looking at this product, I know what problem you have - I had it too, and this thing has solved it at a very reasonable price. That's the best compliment there is for a product like this.

Update 1/16/2010: Roughly eight months later, after one or two uses a month, I've noticed no drop-off in performance.

Customer Review: Perfect balance of power/quality and Price
Summary: 5 Stars

Had unsightly nose hairs. Used this trimmer. No longer have nose hair problem. That's pretty much it! Totally worth $15.

Btw, before I bought this one, I bought a similar trimmer from Walmart (no name brand) for about $5, figuring they're all the same. Not so. The cheaper ones get stuck, lose power, and just generally don't work that well. There's no need to break the bank on a nose hair trimmer, but it's worth a few extra bucks to get a decent one; this trimmer is just about right.

About the light: someone said here they thought the light was useless. Well, it's kinda useless, and certainly is not the "the reason" to buy this trimmer, but it's also sort of handy at moments. That said, the easiest way to use this thing is to just stick it in, wiggle it around randomly, and wait till you don't have nose hairs anymore. If you want to use the light to target something, it's handy. But you really don't need to.
